In the automaker's latest U.S. sales report, General Motors announced plans to boost the Chevrolet Bolt EV electric car's production by at least 20 percent.

The automaker previously announced plans to increase production of the electric car but did not provide a figure.

According to the sales report released this week, global sales of the Bolt EV are estimated to have increased 35 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2018. Sales are up 40 percent in the first half of this year.

GM said the production increase will occur in the fourth quarter of 2018, likely for the 2019 model year Bolt EV. The Bolt EV is built at GM's Orion assembly plant in Michigan, which handles all production of the electric car globally.

Demand for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, especially in the United States, Canada and South Korea, has outstripped production," Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations, said. He added the extra production should help rebuilt inventory across the U.S.
