![]() Interesting, Samsung is expecting BYD's market share to decline in the next few years, while its own share to increase. Given that this is Samsung's projection, it's highly reliable. Is Samsung being arrogant or does Samsung know something we don't? |

According to Samsung's projection, Sony is the biggest loser of future Li-Ion battery war thanks to its exploding battery cells, and BYD's sidelined as well(Warren Buffet was wrong?), leaving the market as Panasonic-Sanyo, Samsung, and LG three-way war.

Hey HyperMiller,
The graph you mention is for the whole Li-ion rechargable battery market. BYD is leader in the mobile phone market region. There are some market exists like "Laptop battery".....etc I won't said it is highly reliable, as you mention, this graph is provide by Samsung, and they are projecting themselves 3% increase per year smoothly. Also, China is also not just BYD, there are other factory outside also, although BYD should cover most of the "China" share.... As I mention before, I don't think Buffett invest in BYD just because of electric car or battery. He (or Mid American) may value BYD's cost cutting, insight in the market, whole business strategy/tatics....some soft-skills more. You may know Buffett is value investor, and he try to avoid high-tech stock because he don't understand it. I believe most of us in this forum know more about EV than he does. I would rather think that he is value more about the management capability of BYD (may be because also he trust Charlie munger and the chair of mid-america) Go back to the main theme of this forum, what did these market leader of Li-ion battery provide for the new electric car.....So far, I heard the technology is come from A123, BYD, Eestock??....not from Japan/Korea company..... |

1. Sanyo : Supplies VW, Ford and Honda(Who has said no to Li-Ion batteries, BTW). Set to be merged with Panasonic(Toyota). 2. Sony : No automotive battery deals. On its way out. 3. Samsung : No automotive battery deals yet. Currently competing with LG for a government run 2013 3rd gen 20 mile PHEV battery project. 4. BYD : Supplies itself 5. LG : GM Volt, Hyundai Blue-Drive system. |

Thanks, HyperMiller...but you know, except Toyota/GM, other car maker are just in a prototype phase..not talking about in real production line.....right?
Interesting, I find another report when I search in reuters http://www.reuters.com/article/press...008+MW20080904 "In 2007, China surpassed Japan for the first time in Li-ion batter production and became the world's largest Li-ion battery producer with an output of 1.35 billion units, up 28.36% against the previous year." May be it is because the factory of Sanyo/Samsung/LG is also in China.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Sep 04 (MARKET WIRE) -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report related to the Electronics industry is available in its catalogue. China Li-ion Battery & Its Raw Materials Market Report, 2007-2008 http://www.reportlinker.com/p092093/...Materials-Mark t-Report-2007-2008.html In the year of 2007, global Li-ion battery market was shared by three powers of China, Japan and Korea. The three nations all had rapid expansion of production capacity in the year and China had the fastest growth in capacity expansion, followed by South Korea. In 2007, China surpassed Japan for the first time in Li-ion batter production and became the world's largest Li-ion battery producer with an output of 1.35 billion units, up 28.36% against the previous year. With respect to the raw material of Li-ion battery, China's production of cathode material for Li-ion battery in 2007 was around 9000 tons, 80% of which are lithium cobaltate. In September 2006, China adjusted upwards its export rebates on lithium cobaltate and Li-ion battery, and its export rebate on Lithium cobaltate and Li-ion battery were raised to 13% from 5% and 17% from 13% respectively. Encourage by the policy, Chinese export of lithium cobaltate and Li-ion battery both increased. Based on the authoritative statistics from the China Battery Industry Association, and the China Industrial Association of Power Sources, this report makes an in-depth study on the current situation, competition pattern and key producers of China Li-ion battery industry and raw material market, and makes forecasts on China's Li-ion battery industry and raw material market. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Include more link about BYD market share in battery market http://auto-report.net/?p=685 If there were any doubts about BYD's battery expertise, here are a couple of impressive statistics: BYD is the global number one supplier of Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries for laptop computers, with a market share of around 65%, and it is the biggest supplier of Li-Ion batteries for mobile phones with a 35% share. There's a good chance you're already a BYD customer! Last edited by ant : 12-08-2008 at 07:57 PM. Reason: include more info |

As for Chinese battery suppliers, the situation is exactly like CE; most of CE stuff we buy are made in China, but by foreign companies. Of course lots of batteries are made in China, but not by Chinese companies. |
