Default Coaxing Auto Makers to Go Electric

From the WSJ:

"What will it take to get more electric cars on American roads? Lots of federal cash and maybe the auto-industry version of a "buy one, get one free" deal.

The Obama administration is proposing to spur production of electric cars with a "build one, get one free" offer: Build one "zero emission" battery-powered vehicle, and get to count it as up to two vehicles when figuring the average fuel efficiency of a new-vehicle fleet."

Bad ideas chasing each other to the bottom.

Why, I figured that GM (Government Motors) already owes me a Volt . . . Maybe two.

Just to prove that it's got nothing to do with technology or capital, roll this around in your brain:

Projected cost of the current wars in the Middle East: $5 trillion
Projected cost of Volts in huge volumes ($25,000-ish)

Result if we just bought Volts instead of supporting our egos and Oil addiction:

Number of Volts = $5 trillion / $25,000 per Volt = 200,000,000 Volts

Yup, that's just about a full replacement for every car on the road. The result would be a reduction of gasoline usage so great that we would not need to import any oil.

Now, who thinks that would be more punishment than going in with our guns blazing? Nothing hurts as much as being poor.

Thus, let's go back to Sep. 11th and instead of dropping real bombs, we drop the news bomb that we are going to transition away from using petroleum for transportation. Where would we be today? You be the judge.
