    Default Leviton's Evr-Green 160 Home Charging Station

I installed the Leviton's Evr-Green 160 Home Charging Station (level 2) today. I paid an electrician to pull and install 240V wiring in my garage ($735 .... obviously highly dependent on how complex your current wiring layout is).

I purchased the Leviton installation kit ($65) and it was a snap installing the charger. It uses a plug-in cord as opposed to hard-wired units.

These are all subject to a 30% federal tax credit until the end of 2011.

I charged the car afterwards and it all worked fine.

I have two (2) 110V charger cords. Is there a market for used Volt charger cords? The one in use is only 2 months old and the other is never-used.

There's a market for everything. You can put one up on eBay for sale. I'd say try for $375+ due to the retail price of the new one at $450. Do you want to sell two? How about keep one around for road-trips where you may not find a charging station with 220V?

I would always keep one 120V just in case the 240V goes bonkers or if you're traveling.

Are you selling just the the cord or the entire 110 charger with the cord?

I will sell the whole unit as it comes from the factory. I will keep one in the car but sell the unused one.

Any offers here before I try eBay???

I'm pretty sure you have to remove the front bumper to get to the charger, but why would he want to sell that? Is there an aftermarket upgrade to a 6.6kW charger (now wouldn't that be cool!)?

Or are you being inappropriately mis-pedantic, and trying to ask if he's selling the entire EVSE (which GM folk tend to call a "charge cord")?

Im not being mis-pedantic or stodgily or ostentatiously learned. All I was looking for was a second cord that I could wire into a current charger so I can charge my Volt in and out of the garage. I view the charger as the box you hang, nothing to do with whats under the Volt's bumper. I'm not even sure what's under the bumper. I doubt if its a charger.

What's inside the car is the battery charger (and I'm pretty sure it's behind the front bumper, on the passenger's side). The thing you plug into the car is called an EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), or charge cord. It's nothing more than a glorified extension cord with some extra smarts added that control an in-line switch. I'll grant, it's a very expensive glorified extension cord, but it's still not a charger.

The charger takes incoming AC and converts it to battery voltage level DC, monitors battery temperature and voltage (and its own current draw), and controls all aspects of charging the battery.

The EVSE tells the car how many amps it can handle, and then engages the contactors to turn on the flow of power. After that it's nothing more than an extension cord with a really picky GFCI.

Why do they refer to these units as charge stations i.e. Voltec 240 charge station. I assumed they were just like any other battery charger, just a lot more expensive ,. Live and learn.
