    48 Hybrid and Electric Car Acronyms. We'll have a test tomorrow, haha :-)

    (ABS) Antilock Brake System
    (AER) All-electric range mode. The vehicle is driven with motor only (with the combustion engine off), range is the total miles driven electrically before the engine turns on for the first time.
    (AGM) Absorbed Glass Mat battery (the 12 volt battery), sometimes called a gel battery. See VRLA battery: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VRLA_battery
    (APM) Advanced Power Module
    (AT-PZEV) Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (California HOV. Also many upper east coast states adopt CA standards)
    (BEV) Battery Electric Vehicle (What the Nissan Leaf is.)
    (BURPING) After a full battery charge, disconnecting and reconnecting the charge cord for a bit of extra charging.

    (CD) Charge Depleting Mode. An operating mode in which the energy storage state-of-charge (SOC) may fluctuate but, on average, decreases while the vehicle is driven.
    (CDH) Blended or charge-depleting hybrid mode. An operating mode in which the energy storage SOC decreases, on average, while the vehicle is driven; the engine is used occasionally to support power requests.
    (CS) Charge-sustaining mode. An operating mode in which the energy storage SOC may fluctuate but, on average, is maintained at a certain level while the vehicle is driven. This is the common operating mode of commercial HEVs.

    SOH battery state of health or temperature corrected estimated capacity in Ah's.
    Ah amp hours measure of battery capacity as in 1800 mAh.
    BMS battery management system that monitors the battery voltages, temps, charging etc.

    27. EVER - Electric Vehicle with Extended Range. Fisker's rearrangement of EREV to distinguish its Karma from the Chevy Volt. A distinction without much of a difference.
    28. EVSE - Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment. It is the cord handle and related electrical equipment that is plugged into the Volt. Sometimes incorrectly called, "the charger". It is the charging interface between the electrical grid and the car. The battery charger is actually inside the car.
    29. FCEV - Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. A type of hydrogen vehicle which uses a fuel cell to produce electricity.
    30. FMM - Fuel Maintenance Mode. FMM will run the Volt engine to use up the old fuel.

    39. LION - Lithium Ion. A type of rechargeable battery. Used in the Chevy Volt.

    42. NiCd - Nickel Cadmium. A type of rechargeable battery.

    44. NiZn - Nickel Zinc. A type of rechargeable battery. Often used in cordless tools.
    45. OTA - Over The Air. Some Volt software updates are downloaded and installed via the OnStar antenna. Otherwise, the car must be taken to the dealer for the update.
    46. PbA - Lead Acid. A type of rechargeable battery. Invented in 1859, they are the oldest type of rechargeable battery.

    57. SOC - State Of Charge. Measures how much useable electricity is left in the battery.
    58. SOH - Battery State of Health or temperature corrected estimated capacity. Measured in Ah's.
    59. TCS - Traction Control System. Helps prevent tires from slipping.
    60. TMS - Thermal Management System. Monitors and maintains the battery pack temperature for optimum performance.
    61. TPMS - Tire Pressure Monitor System. Displays tire pressure on the DIC.

    64. ULEV - Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. 50 percent cleaner emissions than the current average year's models.
    65. VIN - Vehicle Identification Number. Your car's manufacturing number.
