Default High voltage battery manual service disconnect (MSD)

    Hi,

I have pulled out the service plug of the HV battery (MSD).
After putting the service plug back in the HV battery, the car will not power on...
("power off" message appears on the center screen).

So far, here is what i've tried to do to solve the problem, with no luck yet...:
    - 12V power latch
    - tried to reset errors with basic OBD diagnostic tool but doesn't work...
    - error messages that appear are P1E00 and P0AFA
    - fuse check

    So my question is:
Is there a specific procedure required to re-arm the HV battery once the MSD plug has been pulled out and back in?

Any help from Volt specialists appreciated, thanks

    Alex

Which to my read is a polite way to answer "Maybe" to the question "Are you working for a competitor".

Be that as it may, I vaguely recall in the thread on installing a high end sound system (no, I'm not going to look up the thread, 'cause I'm kinda busy) that the subject of the service plug came up. The short answer was "don't do that" as I recall.

You might want to see if you can dig that one up.

This country has had many people with a "I wonder what happens if" sense of adventure and curiosity. Sometimes it leads to a new discovery, sometimes it just bestows "wisdom" (as in, I won't try that again).

Worst case, you get the Volt flat bedded to a dealer. Just start practicing the answer to, "And why did you do that?" with "I wanted to see what would happen".

Default Don't start casting stones just yet

There are many reasons why someone might want to disengage the HV pack. I had a windshield replaced, and the Volt manual recommends disconnecting the pack. I told the Glass Tech this, and he just smiled and said, "don't think that is necessary."

I'll presume you didnt remove the MSD with the car powered up...
There is of course a detailed process for it's correct removal which is only PART of the HV Disabling process (which also includes disconnecting the 12V battery prior to MSD removal).

What was the original intent of it's removal??

With the car OFF (or 12V disconnected) you can generally remove and then reinstall the MSD without issue.(I've done it) But if you tried to power up the car with the plug removed, numerous HV interlock DTCs would have set.

The DTC P0AFA you indicate is actually related to very low Li-Ion battery voltage. It won't set on it's own from just removing the MSD.
However certain high voltage battery DTCs cannot be read or cleared with "generic" OBD2 scan tools and are latched in such a fashion that they must be erased using the GM MDI tool via a precise process.

Someone that isnt at least a "hybridized" automoive technician shouldn't attempt to mess around with the high voltage systems.
My advice would be to tow it to the closest Volt dealer.

Ahh that makes sense. He must have edited the post after Scottf started asking questions...
