Thank you Trevor. I did call and the service guy wanted to see the gear shifter. I will drop by there tomorrow for him to look at it. I guess he didn't quite understand what I was describing. Thanks again!!

I began to feel a crack in the same place that Jeff reported about 2 months ago. It has now developed into an oval shape and the crack has deepened. I was waiting to see if anything else developed before taking in for service.

Sorry to hear that cjohn1. Keep an eye on it, hopefully it doesn't too much worse before you take it in.

My shifter (volt136) cracked as well. First just an inch long horizontal crack like the initial post's pic shows, now a few weeks later it has developed into a smile shape. I figure they didn't get enough QA time on this part, since it changed seveal times right up to the launch.

A little over a week ago, I took my volt in for service, since it has around 7500 miles on it. They took down my info: prepare to rotate tires, order shifter skin, order new 120v charge cord (plug melted a little). The Volt Tech said they will call me for an appointment when the parts are in. I got an email from my Volt Advisor that the charge cord has arrived. Since I use the 240v home Voltec unit at home, I am fine waiting until the shifter skin comes in. Anyway, these couple of minor issues haven't changed how I LOVE to drive it each day.

Sorry to hear that calivolt, but it is good you brought it to your dealer's attention. Hopefully it doesn't get too much worse before the shifter skin comes into the dealer. We are happy to hear that you are still loving it regardless of the flaw!

Update.... I got the shifter handle replaced under warranty and Volt #42 also got it's software updated. It's now one of the oldest and newest Volt's on the road. Happy happy.

Meanwhile, the front windshield got hit with its second piece of gravel on the freeway in as many days so now I need to take it to a glass shop so the tiny window cracks get treated to prevent them from growing.

I figured it was worth picking up a number of 1st year software fixes that prevent unnecessary vehicle diagnostic codes from being set or fix minor erratic user interface problems. None of the updates were "critical" and I haven't actually noticed any change in vehicle behavior yet.

    Smile GM Service Update

Update: Brought my Volt (VIN#136) in last week for 7500 mile tire rotation. In addition, I had the cracked shifter skin replaced, the charge cord replaced, and oil changed. The oil life was at 73%, but I wanted to have it changed, since I had one long trip (over 800 miles) and felt it was a good idea to get some clean oil in after what used to be called "break-in". Anyway, the shifter now looks and feels great - it may be just me but the plastic feels a little thicker. Upon my request, they checked for a software upgrade, but said GM would not let them upgrade anything unless there was an issue - I am happy that I have no issues!
The only downside to the service was the fact that they had to keep the car overnight. The Service Dept. had to locate an oil filter, they thought since the Volt shares the same displacement gas engine as the Cruise, that it would share the same filter - it does not. They were really nice about the delay, offered me a rental car, etc... but driving anything else would have made me miss it even more. My kids teased me that my 240 Volt Charger was lonely without the Volt to charge... I joked back that of course our Volt was lonely without us, but chargers can't have feelings!
So, now I am back to raving about my Volt w/o any caveats.
