My Volt's shifter is cracked too.
The General backs up their products. Just take it in. I've noticed my Buicks never die, my Chevy's all needed attention in the first 3 months.

Ours just did that crack thing also. We have had our Volt since spring of 2011. The crack just showed up now. I called Mike Savoie Chevrolet and they ordered a replacement. We also have the kit on order to stop the front brake pads from ratling. This was only a problem on the "earlier" Volts. The parts have been on order for 3 weeks for the brakes. I hope that both show up soon.

I tried an aftermarket replacement, I suggest you to use this service because it worked perfectly for others, I have had one of these in my car for a year and the car shifts perfectly, very solid and no issues still today.
Mine cracked the other day too. Will probably take it in for replacement soon. Just curious, what are the aftermarket options for the shifter? I've never liked the hollow, plastic feel to it.

Running errands today and after the first stop my wife said, "look a your gear shifter." It had a crack running from east to west. nothing had fallen on it...nothing had dragged across it...can't even blame heat - the car had been closed and locked, but it wasn't a hot day.
Volt is an early 2011 (now about 18 months old).
Only explanation I can come up with is that, living in California, it may be an extension of the dreaded San Andreas Fault!

That is probably due to having jewelry on your hand, maybe a ring. That shiny plastic looks brittle.
You're not the first to have it happen, there was at least one or two threads on here in the past about a cracked shifter lever. They were promptly replaced under warranty.
