    Default Nav system enhancement requests

I really like the Volt Nav system. I use it going to work and back because it checks for traffic on the route. Obviously though, I don't need the "normal guidance". It would be a nice enhancement to turn off the "normal guidance" and only break into the audio program when there is a traffic issue.

A kind of related thing would be if you are using the nav system to go somewhere you are moderately familiar with - it would be nice to have "less detailed" guidance, just enough so to remind you of major intersections.

Try Config --> Nav --> Voice Prompt, and deselect Voice Guidance. It's not exactly what you want, but it works for me!

on feature that I realy miss form my Garman is the road speed display, and the red indication when it is being exceeded.

It realy helps with roads that have lots of speed changes and police waiting for you to miss one.

That's the feature I miss from my TomTom.

I hate to be a curmudgeon, but I think that the nav system in my Volt is vastly inferior to even my old Garmin. The current system does not display the name of all the streets on the map as I approach them, some names being off the screen. When you lower the resolution (increase distance), you lose streets AND names! The Garmin always put the next cross street on the top of the screen. I found that this was a very useful feature. I'd far rather see the next cross-street (or exit) than the current radio station or musical track.

Basically, I think that GM should either look at the competition or buy the nav system from another company (like Garmin, Tom-Tom, or Magellan). It's really a weak point.

I found it does show exits and things like that as long as you have it in full map mode. If you are seeing radio information, touch the "Full Map" bar at the top. The entire screen is then taken up by the navigation system.

I won't debate too much about which nav system is better; they all seem to have some quirks. I can say the Volt HDD-based nav is far better than my Acadia's DVD-based nav system.

    fishhawk,

Unfortunately, I am in full screen mode. The Volt nav system simply does not show as much info as my 5 year old Garmin, though it does do a better job displaying freeway exits which is nice in complicated exchanges. Hopefully, GM can, if they want, improve things with software upgrades.

Oh, sorry, I understood you to say you are seeing radio/music information, which suggested to me you were not in full screen mode. My mistake.

Okay, my turn to list navigation unit suggestions:

    * when entering an address there should be a way of shortcutting the city and state based on my current location. For example, I should be able to pick from a short list of nearby cities. My 8 year old Prius does this.

    * the keyboard is waaaay too slow in responding to letter key presses. I wish there could be a user preferences setting to enable a more QWERTY-style keyboard layout.

    * I wish there was a way to search for points of interest that were within a configurable distance of my existing destination route. For instance, I would like to search for all Starbucks locations within 1 mile of my existing route. I would be willing to drive a few blocks off the freeway but not off into some suburb several miles away from my existing freeway route.

    * there should be a shortcut list of recent or configurably persistent point of interest searches I could choose from rather than typing in a POI search every time.
