What version of software does my Volt have? What is the newest one? Release Notes?

I've seen a bunch of posts that say things like...

While I was at the dealer, they updated my software...

But, I've only left my car at the dealer once in early February. So...

• How do you check what version you are running? (Is there a diagnostics screen?)

• Is there a list of versions and release dates published? (How does GM tell the dealers?)

• Is there a release note available for these releases? (What does this new version fix?)

I'd love to be able to tell my dealer, that I want to get the 1.101.2 version that fixes the "audio issue" (just made that up) and check to see that I got upgraded from 1.000.0.

Any ideas?

Well a car is a bit more complex than an iPhone but...

First and foremost, what specific radio problems are you experiencing and have you called your Volt advisor or visited your dealer for these concerns?

If you had almost ANY issues with your radio performance or behavior there would probably have been a software update applied or at least a check to see if you had received the corrective software at factory. (there has been various radio software released)

Vehicle software is a constant "work in progress" so as cars leave the assembly line, they are often departing with widely varying levels of revision, HOWEVER most all would NOT be considered DETRIMENTAL to the safe, normal, and proper operation of the vehicle.
As IF this was so, GM would certainly be recalling the previous cars for such updates, and so far no such recall has had to be issued.
Which given the complexities of the Volt, is a testament to the Volt team's dedication to insure the Volt's software was absolutely ready for prime-time at launch.

THAT BEING SAID...

You actually CAN determine exactly what level is currently "available" and revision history by entering your VIN at this website:

You then must select each module one-at-a-time to observe the complete revision history and often with associated primary "fix" information .

But unfortunately what you can’t know (without special tools) is what level of software you currently have loaded.

Plus you can’t really just go into a dealership and request an "update" as unless your car is exhibiting a documented condition or one that is determined to be software related, because (right or wrong) GM won't pay the dealer under warranty to perform "routine" updates.
So to do would generally be at you own cost, UNLESS it was to rectify a condition THAT YOUR VEHICLE HAS BEEN VERFIED TO BE EXHIBITING.

However GM is committed to provide CRITICAL updates under warranty and is actually working to be able to deliver these "over-IP" when necessary in the near future. There have been a few tests of this all-new mechanism.
To date I don't believe anyone other than a few CAB members have ever been updated in this fashion as it requires a certain level of reliability in the cellular connection and a level vehicle electrical stability throughout and as such a level of owner cooperation and commitment to NOT be having to drive the car and to be plugged in while the update is being performed.

So in the end, the Volt certainly has "raised the bar" with respect to vehicle networked infrastructure, connectivity and software complexity. But GM programming systems currently require a level of suitably trained human intervention that essentially demands dealer involvement.

It's going to be a while before you can just update your car like you can your iPhone. Perhaps someday...
