Default Delray Beach has 3 new complimentary public charging stations

Here is a photo from this weeks rbbon cutting ceremony in Delray Beach FL. The 3 charging units are in a public lot, and were privately donated to the city along with a check for $500.00 to pay for the first year of electrical costs ! Hows that for commitment ? Attending the event was 3 VOLTS, 2 Toyota eRAV's, and two homebuilts ( one pictured )

Wow, privately funded in a public parking lot. That is a great idea. So, I wonder who did it?

    Sweet.

I would prefer to see a "You will be towed and fined if you are not an electric vehicle." How many people will just say it was the last spot when they arrived if the electric spot is at a premium location, or park there to spite the overly righteous green car owners that got a free lunch with the rebates on their tax nickel?

Think those people don't exist? Just read the comments to recent web news articles about electric cars from the average Joe. A lot of hate out there.

With the understanding that, at least in California, the Volt isn't an electric vehicle. It'd get towed here. Politicians, ya gotta love 'em.

Without permission I won't post the name of the individual here that spearheaded this effort, but I believe it was also coordinated with a local South Florida electric car club. The individual had a silver Volt and the 2 electric Toyotas in attendance.

On the northwest corner of NE 1st Ave and NE 2nd St in Delray Beach. Lots of trees so it is difficult to see on google map satellite but great if you like shady parking spots ! A few blocks away is Atlantic Ave with it's restaurants, cafes, bars, etc that stretch for blocks and blocks.

I was there with Steve for the ribbon cutting and the individual who coordinated the installation said they chose that parking lot because it tended to be the least utilized while still being close to the downtown area.

They also put each of the three chargers between two parking spots, so the strategy was to reduce the likelihood of an ICE vehicle blocking access to these chargers.

Supposedly, these chargers are already on the map for those interested in using them.

There would have to be a ZEV sign to be towed. Read the California vehicle code at this link and note the final paragraph about allowing vehicles the right to charge.

    http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc22511.htm

Here is the text about the required sign:

"The posting required for an offstreet parking facility owned or operated either privately or by a local authority shall consist of a sign not less than 17 by 22 inches in size with lettering not less than one inch in height which clearly and conspicuously states the following: "Unauthorized vehicles not displaying valid zero-emission vehicle decal identifications will be towed away at owner's expense. Towed vehicles may be reclaimed at

    __________________________________________________ _ or by telephoning

    (Address)

    __________________________________________________ __________________."
(Telephone number of local law enforcement agency)

    *

The sign shall be posted in either of the following locations:

    (1) Immediately adjacent to, and visible from, the stall or space.

    (2) In a conspicuous place at each entrance to the offstreet parking facility."

As I had promised the city officials at the ribbon cutting, I am happily patronizing the local businesses because of the free parking-charging now available to us. I am writing this from Starbucks on Atlantic Ave while my car is charging There is another Volt charging in the lot at the same time as mine....two in the same place is not bad considering they don't even sell Volts in Florida !
