    Mike -

Question for you: have you seen GallonsOfGas values below 1.0?

After 9 months on the same tank, I'll be running out of gas tomorrow. I'm purposely running it dry to test out "limp mode" behavior. Tonight, while I still have a bit of gas left, my downloaded data set is telling me that GallonsOfGas is 0. Not 0.5 or something, a perfect zero. I'm wondering if this "0" behavior in the data is tied to the "Low" indication on the dash when the tank is close to empty.

Hmmm, no, actually now that I think of it, the Volt was displaying "Low" on the dash for the last week or so but my data feed said GallonsOfGas = 1.17 . It was only today after I burned most of that remaining gas (but NOT all of it) that it reads 0.

Have you seen all values between 0 and 1, or do they cut off at some low value? Of course it's possible that I'm literally right on the edge of running out, between the bottom two resolution points of the fuel gauge in the tank-- or below it!

And does that number come straight from OnStar, or do you have to reverse engineer it?

I'll let mike answer but I can say I've had multiple days below 1.0 though 0.986 is the smallest I've seen, other than zero. But I've had it bounce to 0 then back to over a gallon..

Looking at my history, I also saw a few readings at 0.986 last summer, but nothing between that and flat zero.

It occurred to me to look at my OnStar mobile app, since that shows the gas remaining in yet another way (0-100%), but it now says Low/Low/Low across the board for percent/gals/miles .

Yup, there's values in the database between 1 and 0. One thing to keep in mind is that the GallonsOfGas sensor seems to be a bit wobbly, but I'd think 0 would read 0 no matter what.

Well, something is weird there then. I just got back from my "run the tank dry" session, and it turns out there was about 0.4 gallons in the tank, overnight during the readings where my VoltStats download was saying "0". I know this from the car's efficiency screen that told me how much gas I had consumed. I started off (Saturday) with 1.17 gals indicated per VoltStats download, consumed 0.8 gals yesterday, and today after I ran the car dry I had consumed 1.19 gals total since Saturday morning. 1.17 and 1.19 are very close

So my experience here this weekend indicates that A) the tank level gauge is extremely accurate (no 0 offset) and B) very low values get reported to you (VoltStats) as 0, but they're not actually 0. Maybe the cutoff is 0.5 or something, and below that they tell you 0? Either that or the tank level sensor just doesn't read well below 1 gallon, although it's very accurate down to the 1 gal level, and the fuel consumed measurement (not tank level) is very accurate.

Any updates on the whole source availability thing with GM? I'd hate to burn a weekend setting up the proxies and running the scenarios I need to reverse it myself only to have GM allow you to re-release your code a week or two later and ending up wasting that effort.

(Although, I'm not sure I believe they'll ever let that happen -- the CES announcements make it sound like they're probably charging for API access to a limited set of developers.)

Alternately, has anyone com across any documentation elsewhere on the 'net on the existing APIs?

Mentioned in this video as well. Lot of cool things that OnStar is doing.

Sorry, no news, and probably not going to be any. I haven't heard a peep from Onstar in months.

Unfortunately, that doesn't surprise me. As I said in my reply, I suspect they asked you to take the code down with the intention of selling access to the APIs to a limited set of developers. And, as far as I can tell, you're the only person who has reverse engineered them and published anything about them. If anyone else has been doing it, they're either describing them in a way that is making them hard to find, or are being deliberately quiet about it.

Which is a shame -- either they're just being short-sighted, or there's flaws with the model they don't want public. In either case, I guess I'll just redo the work myself.
