I started my ownership with a 310 mile trip home, followed by a 200 mile round trip the following week, with a partial opportunity charge thrown in. I am now at 774 miles total and have just managed to get lifetime mpg up to 71. Life is good.
My Volt will also go to Ohio this weekend (190 miles one way). Have not been getting all-electric driving - 240V charger not installed yet and using low setting on EVSE due to use of extension chord. And cool weather gets much less than 40 miles range. And no permission yet to charge at work (there IS a 120V outlet where I park). But I am enjoying the learning curve.
How about that Nav system? It REALLY is good.
There are times when the Volt is just another car -- and then many times where it just goes a whole level beyond. It is either a very refined vehicle or just a new paradigm.
As long as your extension cord is 12 gauge and reasonably short (25'-50' is fine, though others have used 100') you should be fine for 12 amp charging. You should only have an issue if your plug has other loads on its circuit in which case the extension cord wouldn't be the thing that matters anyway).
If plugging in to an outside plug it's important the plug be GFCI protected. It's a really good idea even if plugging in inside...
