Thread: Never had the engine start while plugged into my 240 volt charger!

Smile Never had the engine start while plugged into my 240 volt charger!

    Hello Fellow Volt Owners:

I remote start my vehicle, while it is in my garage every morning. I keep the climate control set on auto, comfort and 75 degrees. I am remote starting from my iPhone. The circulator pump and the heater goes on and warms the battery and warms the cabin.

I have never had the ICE start while it was plugged into my 240 volt charger. I tested it over 5 times while I watched it, just to be sure.

I am getting over 40 miles in 52 degree weather. I never beat the car and am on back roads under 40 miles per hour. I put it on Eco after my initial remote start. I coast whenever possible.

    I love my new toy!

Keeping your speed low is giving you that range at 52 degrees. I look forward to your report when the weather warms up. Who knows, you could be the first to have a 55 or 60 mile EV range. Enjoy Your Volt!

Nice. I actually requested they have a feature to automatically go to comfort mode xx+5 degrees upon remote start and then automatically go to ECO and back to xx upon normal start. Why make this a manual process I say.

    Hey Big Moe!
Glad to hear you're enjoying your new toy!
But there's a very good reason why you havn't witnessed your ICE running when using your "remote start" function (while plugged in) as it probably wasnt cold enough to require it. Now if was colder than say 25 degrees, then the situation might be different!
With the weather improving looks like you'll have to wait until next year!! (but that's a good thing isn't it??)

I like your driving techniques though. Easy to see why you're getting 40+ miles at 52 degrees. Can't WAIT to hear what you make at 72!!

    ENJOY YOUR VOLT!

I have had my Volt start the engine twice when the temperature in my garage was in the high 40's. This occurred when hooked to a 220 vac charger. It happened ~ 1 out of 5 remote starts. So be careful.

seems to me that the volt (or any other car) should NEVER be able to start in a garage.....no need to point out the danger....
can the temperature not be adjusted up or down through the electric mode ?
    be safe.....

It WON"T start without a REMOTE START command. That is why it is called remote START.

so it is OK to run the ice if you use your REMOTE....right ? tell that to the family in our area last year whose three year old got ahold of the REMOTE and started their car in the garage.......
killed three young children playing in the basement before anyone realized what had happened.......very sad....

It only runs about 10 minutes. That's not going to kill anyone.

Interestingly, my Volt has not started the ICE while outside at 32F.

It would be a good idea for a code change to inhibit the car from starting while hooked to a 220 charger. The car must know it is charging off of a 220 V charger. This could also be an option for those that park outside in very cold climats. I would think that this would be an easy code change.
