Default SPX is on top of things!

I ordered my Volt on 02/17/2011, and I am still at status 1102 as my dealer doesn't yet have an allocation. SPX called me yesterday and let me know that I am eligible for a free Coulomb charger and up to $1200 in installation credit as I am in the Bay Area in California....I may have a charger installed long before my Volt is even built!!!

I'm very impressed with SPX right now. And crossing my fingers that my dealer gets an allocation this week.

WAAAAYY too early to be impressed by them too much yet. They (and I support this policy) will wait until you are closer to production. They must go off the production schedule. I can only speak of the EV Project with SPX and Ecotality when I say they don't quite have it together just yet. Perhaps the Coulomb side of SPX is better. We should have our Volt well before we get our free charger simply because they don't have the EV Project running in our area yet even though there are Volts here and more coming in short order.

I am still waiting for my first visit from the electrician that SPX sends over to give an estimate. I haven't been in a rush, as my electrical usage is low during the no air-conditioning time frame. The longer the wait; the more options to choose from. If SPX gets their portable 240 volt charger shipping soon, I may skip the "free" charger.

GE has yet to give me a firm shipping date on the Limited Edition WattStation. That is another reason to consider the portable SPX. Use that one until the GE WattStation arrives. There are two other relatives who need chargers so I can use less fuel when traveling between the homes.

SPX can be on top of things in my experience. I first contacted them a couple of days after Xmas - by 11th January my free Coulomb charge had been installed - no cost to me. I didn't get off 1102 until a week later and I'm still waiting for my Volt. The charger has sat patiently in my garage constantly flashing me that it's 'Available' for almost two months now! Not sure why Paul thinks they won't install it when you are still on 1102 - perhaps that's the way it is in Texas!

I haven't had much luck with them so far.

I contacted them six weeks ago; eventually a contractor came round to look my house, but thereafter no actual progress was made. Last week I received a call telling me they wanted to send a contractor round. I said that one had already visited, and was told that that contractor no longer works for them. I was asked to provide times when I was available for an appointment. I gave a fairly large set of open times, but haven't been contacted since...

Perhaps it is the area you live, the difference between the free programs that use Coulomb vs. Blink (Ecotality), or what that specific person at SPX is told to say. I can't get them out for the first check even though I did the survey, submitted plenty of info, approved by them for the free Blink/install/Ecotality DOE program, and will be getting my Volt likely within a week. The main issue seems to be that if they are not ready in your area, they will come out when they are ready. Last they told me was they were waiting on details from Ecotality and waiting for their ONE electrian they will have for some time in our area to be ready (finishing certification they said). I expect once that is done, then they will come out and over price a VERY simple install and I will be forced to shell out some cash, wait, or go another route. They used to give me more of the "we have to follow GM's production schedule" line after looking up our GM order details, but that has fallen now to the we are waiting on the above items.

SPX has been fine to work with, but they've had problems with their electrical contractors responsible for installation in So.Cal. I'm now set for install the second week of March, by the third contractor who's been responsible for my account.

Finally got an electrician to visit from SPX. They handle second meter installations and we discussed how it would be accomplished. Since I plan to purchase a Model S, the plan is to add a duplicate 200 amp panel (maybe 125 amp if possible.) Edison suggests to have the wiring enter an additional box under both meter panels where they would split the power to both panels at that point. The extra junction box must be accessible by Edison from the outside of the home. I want everything flush mounted with the same stucco look at the edges. I will need my own plasterer for that.

Tesla and the electrician have mentioned 80 amp service for Model S. The "free" Volt charger needs 40 amp service. Everything is in the garage area, so installation is not complex.

The electrician is getting his own Volt. He is excited to work on this project.

We got our install estimate today based on the SPX survey. Yeah...uh.. simple install and they are looking at 1450+ dollars. I asked if they have final Ecotality info yet and they said still waiting on that. I told them the estimate was way to high. SPX explained because it is paid via D.O.E. program, they are going to have to pay the rate regardless of what a local electrician charges. Great! However I can't see the job taking more than 3 or 4 hours. 6 if he is reallllly slow. Don't see the rate they have to pay is more than a 100 an hour. Even if you had 400 in parts, that still only a grand. The estimate stated 35-45 ft in conduit. I measured about 21 and no more than 25 ft. so hopefully we can come to terms on my "free" charger install.
