    Default Conquest Sales

A "conquest" sale is when an auto company steals away a loyal buyer from another manufacturer with the hope of converting them into a regular customer.

As reported here (http://gm-volt.com/2010/10/27/chevy-...cial-unveiled/) over half of the people who who have ordered a Volt are first time buyers of a Chevrolet brand vehicle. One question that wasn't answered is whether any of these conquest sales had purchased other GM brands in the past.

To that end, I thought would be interesting to poll GM-Volt members to see how many of us will be "conquest" sales for GM.

    Half is a crazy stat.

    I'm a "conquest" sale and owned a 1) 76' Ford Mustang, 2) '88 Toyota truck, 3) '91 Ford Explorer, 4) '96 Honda Civic, 4) '03 Ford Expedition, 5) '05 Subaru.

A couple of days ago a colleague stopped me in the parking lot stopped me and said something to the effect, "Ford or Chevy, you're supposed to pick one and stick with it". He knew about the Fusion Hybrid, but didn't know about the Focus from 8 years ago or the three Kas prior to that…
In this case, I don't see the point of brand loyalty per se. I evaluate all the vehicles available to me and make a decision based on my actual requirements.

Hmmm... Don't know how to answer the poll. I've owned a GM vehicle in the last 10 years (an Olds Alero, bought 11 years ago - and my day to day driver before we bought the Volt). So I can't check the first 2.

But I HAVEN'T bought a GM vehicle in the near past (11 years ago doesn't qualify), so I can't check the 3rd choice.

The last 2 cars we've bought were Nissans, so I can't check the 4th.

    Oh, the quandry!

I use to be loyal to Toyota until the many problems (brakes and transmission) I had with my Tundra. I'm now a fan of GM-Chevy.

Our family has enjoyed GM products since the '50s. At least a dozen purchases with one defection in the '80's to a Lincoln that turned out to be a true lemon where 100% of the money was returned after hiring a lemon lawyer. The low spot in GM quality occurred for us in 1973 with the El Camino that just couldn't compare with the 1970 El Camino (that I drove for 350,000 miles.) Those frameless doors with plastic trim were the cause but were greatly improved in the final Eldorado Cadillac models from '92 to 2002. The ultimate massive car we enjoyed was the '72 Cadillac Eldorado with a front seat so wide, that 4 adults could sit in the front! Gas attendants would just stare and say, "Egads, what a car!"

I have never owned a GM product. My parents always did, however - Oldsmobiles and now Buicks. I have owned primarily BMWs until purchasing a Ford Focus hatch back after my last 3 series came off lease, 4 years ago. Purpose of that was to save for something around this time. Early on, that was for another BMW. I'm getting a Volt instead.

    Let's see,... (New cars only)

    A 1967 SS350 Camaro,
A 1971 Meyer's Toad (Dune buggy, Home built)
    A 1975 Cosworth Vega,
    A 1984 Fiero
    A 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan
    And finally, a 2011 Volt.

My folks and extended family have always owned Oldsmobile and/or Buicks, and a couple BMW's too, and a used, small Acura.

I started off with an Acura Integra GSR 1994....still have it.
    Then a 1998 Land Rover Discovery....long gone
Then a 2000 Lexus RX300...great vehicle, sold it for $7000 with 200K miles on it
    August 2009 bought a Buick Enclave...great vehicle
    Now bought the Volt.
So I have migrated over to GM these past two years now.

Well, I haven't committed to any new car (yet.) I have never even owned an AMERICAN car. For the first time in a LONG time, the cars I'm considering are American. Namely, the Volt, and the new Focus. My third choice is Japanese, but 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
