HOW MANY SONG FILES (MP3) CAN THERE BE ON THE ROOT DIRECTORY OF THE HARD DRIVE?
I tried to read all the other threads that discussed this but couldn't seem to find a clear answer. I have about 850 of my favorite songs that I can play with Winamp on various computers. I can easily put them all in one folder, if that is necessary, but what is the file limit inside folders? I pick up my Volt tomorrow (January 26) so I would like to get them on my flash drive and be ready for transfer. I have a CD with 26 songs for emergency use, of course, so I won't go through total withdrawel. lol.
Jerry, Congratulations on delivery of your new Volt! With the 3 month trial of XM Satellite Radio, there will be a lot to listen to in addition to the CD and your MP3 files.
You may find it best to keep the songs on the USB, as they only play in alphabetical order if transferred to the hard drive. This problem is well known with the GM HDD entertainment systems, so Volt owners are not alone in their frustration.
Using the iPhone and recent iPod models is another option. The Volt reads the playlists and contents as you access the music by using the center console controls. Learn the infotainment controls while parked, it will make your drive time safer and more fun.
If it uses any common modern OS (I'm guessing some variation of unix/linux - I just can't see Windows or DOS... ) the number of files in the drive's root directory (which is probably not where your mp3's default to anyways) is technically unlimited but realistically should be kept less than a couple thousand. In subdirectories, where your mp3's are probably showing up as the 'root' music directory it is truly limited only by disk space - though again, you don't want too many (i.e. several thousands).
