Default Check Engine light came on CD mode. Onstar says fault reads one cell has problem

My Check Engine light came on with 28 miles left in charge depleting mode. Stopped and called Onstar and they remotely read the fault code. They said the code is historical (not currently having a problem I guess he meant) and that the code was something to do with one of the cells in the battery. I was told while it was safe to drive I need to take it to my dealer ASAP to have it checked. That was yesterday. When I got home I had done a total of 44.6 miles on battery before the ICE came on, my best yet.
So in the morning I’ll call my dealer.
While it’s there, they can also look at the right rear door that does not align up with the body very well, it sticks out about 2mm. Both rear lights have condensation in them, and occasionally the car will start instantly charging when I plug it in even though it is set to delayed charge after 7pm.
I’ll post an update when I have one.

I thought the lowest level of monitoring was a 3P cell string. Does GM monitor down to the 1 cell level??

I had the same problem emerge today. Like you, I called OnStar and OnStar remotely read 2 fault codes, one for battery and one for electrical drive. They told me it was urgent to go to the dealer RIGHT NOW.

When I took it to the dealer, they had seen the same problem/fault codes in the third volt they sold (mine was the second -#565, and the first one they sold lives in Miami).

What the problem in the 3rd Volt turned out to be was an "actuator" in the fuel door?? As I understand it, if you don't fully close your fuel cap, there will be an air pressure leak in the fuel tank that has an impact on emissions - or something like that. There is a sensor there somewhere that, in the 3rd Volt at my dealer, thought that the cap was not on tight, gave all sorts of bad readings, and had to be replaced.

The dealer gave me a loaner (a brand new Malibu) to use until they figure it out. If they had more Volts, I would highly recommend them to everyone!

You did the right thing calling Onstar because they have a "cheat sheet" that helps them to determine if the detected fault merits an immediate dealership visit or not.

But without the actual Diagnostic Trouble Codess (DTC) that were stored it is impossible to determine if these situations were in any way "identical". eg. Saying there was a DTC related to the "battery" or he "electrical drive" could be one of a few hundred.

There have actually been vary few isssues being reported with the 1st wave of Volts but some of the DTCs that have been most prevalent include:

-charge port door frozen shut or incorrectly closing due to snow and/or ice
Correction: clear away any build-up of ice and/or snow around the charge door BEFORE pressing the button to release. Whenclosing the door make sure it latches correctly before driving (there's a DIC warning if it is left open)

    - unintentionally or intentionally pressing the POWER button (repeatedly or holding) while in gear or moving (sets various electric motor and electric drive DTCs depending on conditions)
Correction: please don't do that! (unless there's some valid reason for an emergency shut down of the car) there may be a software update down the road so that repeated pressess won't shut it down (hold only) but for now that's how it works.

    - fuel cap left loose
Correction: alway tighen your fuel cap until it "detents" into place

Took the car in this morning, they called at 4:30pm; they have no idea what is wrong and are awaiting a Volt engineer to look at it. No snow or ice here in So. Cal, and I have not put any gas in it yet so have not even touched the gas cap yet. Thanks for all the replies.

When possible if you can eventually get the actual DTCs that were et it would be helpful to the Volt collective. Keep in mind that replacing your battery assembly doesnt neccesarily mean there was something wrong with the battery itself. (there' a lot of other "stuff" in that battery box) Currently they would be replacing the entire battery assembly for ANY issues within the unit whether it be cell issues, cooling system, battery managment etc etc. This permits both a faster repair, as well as providing the entire unit back to field engineering for failure analysis.
Hope you're back in your Volt soon!

We got the Volt back from the dealer. Two fault codes were listed: POBBE AND PIEOO. Apparently there's incompatibility between the car and the 240V input. It was explained to us that the car was working fine with 110V and when 240V was plugged in, the two system was “shaking hands” exchanging information, somehow the delay charge mode info did not get fully passed on and caused immediate charge. It created one of the error codes.
The dealer also adjusted the rear right door to even out the gap between the door and the body. As far as the slight foggy condensation in the tail lights, Volt stated it’s normal condition and no repair was needed.
Our dealer was extremely interested in getting all the details about how all the issues occurred. They took notes and asked tons of questions. They took care of the rental car. The car was cleaned prior to be handled over back to us. The driver’s seat was completely covered with plastic. In addition, a beautiful gift basket with one gift card each for Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and Starbucks was placed on the passenger’s seat as a nice surprise. Both the service director and the technician gave us their cell phone numbers so that we can reach them anytime issues arise.
When we got home, we plugged in the 240V charger and it worked as programmed.
We have to say GM and our dealer both scored “A++.”
