The Volt sounds system is marginal. I know it is designed to use minium battery power but hopefully we can up grade the speakers and not have to mess with the radio itself.

I've seen someone else say this also. I listened casually to some XM radio channels in a Volt and thought it sounded pretty good compared to the allegedly premium audio system in my 2004 Prius which is very muddy at lower sound frequencies. I guess I have low expectations for car audio. :-)
It sounded pretty good to me as well. I didn't get to crank it, but it was good quality.
WOT the over all quality was good but it did not have much "base". It is certainly not someting to worry much about but a speaker upgrade usually helps on most OEM products.

The BOSE system sounds good. Played Evanescence "Bring Me To Life" today. About half way through it sounds like a track is playing from the rear seat ceiling area. Very cool.

I've been pretty happy with the sound system, too. My priorities lie with a "clean" and accurate sound more than heavy bass tones. While I listen some to folks like Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, and Pink Floyd/Roger Waters, the majority of my listening is to classical symphonies, chamber music (piano trios, string quartets, etc), and solo piano, violin, and cello. I look for a sound system that allows me to hear the different instruments clearly and faithfully, and I think the Volt's sound system does that nicely -- at least as well as the Alpine system in my Honda Civic hybrid and better than the premium sound system in my 2004 Prius. Of course, I've never been spoiled by a custom-built system -- but I'm happy with the Bose system so far (though it does sometimes get confused by tracks on the hard drive that are longer than 25 minutes).

It's great to be able to USB connect a portable device and have the BOSE search then play the tracks in alphabetical order with the option to save to harddrive. The tracks play in order without a "play" command. The bass is plenty for me. I like both bass and treble set up to about 70%. Mid range lowered to 40%. Fade to rear about 40%. Pink Floyd "Mother" sounds very good BTW.

I am right there with you Dan. I too listen to alot of classical and this Bose system is very faithful. Also I have been downloading a lot of talk programs (T. Jefferson, Science Friday, etc)to a thumb drive and listening via the usb port. In other vehicles I have had, following these conversation oriented shows can be quite difficult. The Bose system handles this job admirably.
I suspect someone complaining about the lack of bass is someone who likes to crank it up. I have no idea how well this system handles that, nor will I because this is not something that really appeals to me. The high quality of the sound system was definitely something of a pleasant surprise for me.

Volt 836!
hehe. I like the system, and I am usually into bass. However, this is good enough where I won't waste the time upgrading.
Logged over 44,000 miles in my Volt, "B'Elanna" (Named after B'Elanna Torres of Star Trek Voyager.) Now powered in part by a 2.88kW Solar system!
