    Default Emmissions

Wow, you really have to build to 4 separate emissions standards in the US?!? (FE9, NE1, NB8, NB9).

Wouldn't it be less expensive, due to economies of scale, to simply build to the most stringent standard?

Sorry, that's the Program Manager in me leaking out.

    I hear ya!
In reality though this isnt so unusual.
Most "overrides" are nothing more than a different underhood emissions label required for state compliance and in the case of California or CARB states, possibly a slightly different powertrain/engine control module calibration. Generally there are no hardware differences just software. Remember changing calibrations to optimize combustion stoichiometry for emissions in a specific point of a state enforced test cycle will generally come with some sort of sacrifice- often in mpg or general drivability. Why make other states suffer?

    Great info, thanks WOT!!!

One question ... The vat majority of these are not "options" exactly, coming standard with the car. Could this be an advance sign of the features that they might consider making optional in future model years? That is, loading the car up for this launch model year only.

Personally, I'd be interested in swapping out the LUU option

You and lots of other people.. the Volt would get pretty peppy if it suddenly lost 400lbs of genset and even more if it had been designed from scratch for that.

I actually meant swapping it out for other genset technologies, like Wankel, opposing cylinder, fuel cell, etc., all the things that you all have been discussing here.

No doubt, electrification of the drivetrain opens up all of those possibilities.

No not at all. As you can see almost ANYTHING that goes into a car's construction has an RPO code. Determining which are "standard" equipment and which are truely "optional" can only be deciphered using the appropriate Vehicle Order Guide (or perhaps online order tools/applications like those found on the chevrolet.com website)

I guess I shouldn't be surprised--given the fact that metropolitan areas can mandate their own boutique gasoline formulas. Oxygenated gasoline...don't get me started, especially when all modern cars have O2 sensors that control/optimize the mixture.

I heard that the premium cloth is like vinyl with a cloth insert in the middle. Is that true?
