There IS a section about this in the owner's manual (both the Volt being towed and the Volt towing another load).
Towing a trailer or other vehicle: not allowed.
    Being towed:
    - should be towed on a flatbed trailer: special instructions for loading it.
    - can be towed by lifting front wheels on a dolly ("dinghy towing" is forbidden). Be careful about ground clearance of the rear.

I was told today during my test drive that there will be a hitch kit to hold a bike rack eventhough the bottom center of the back bumper has a backup light that sticks out lower than the bumper bottome....

That means towing with all 4 wheels on the ground?

FYI - The SAE Volt article that was linked to a couple days ago had the some official specs on GVWR and Curb Weight.

    Curb weight (lb/kg): 3781/1715
    GVWR (lb/kg): 4583/2079

Correct! Don't ask about the meaning though, Dinghy towing is out, Dolly towing is OK (with cautions) -- page 10-77 of owner's manual.

I've definitely been hoping to occasionally tow a small trailer, at moderate speeds. The information in this thread has been helpful. Indeed, the weights pencil out just fine, and the ability to do light towing would be another step positioning the Volt as the one car you need, rather than as a "second vehicle", which is what GM's vision is.

Here's a Cruze hitch. Should be the same thing for Volt.

Edit: I sent them an email asking if it also fits Volt.

Likely not, due to the Volt's unique rear fascia with centered back-up lamp.

You're right WOT. Cruze hitch won't fit Volt.

    From etrailer:

Thank you for asking the following question:
Does this hitch also fit Chevy Volt?

    Answer:
I am sorry, but hitch # 60275 is only a fit for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. At this time we do not offer any hitch fits for your Chevrolet Volt. Feel free to check back frequently, as we generally receive the new hitch fits as soon as the manufacturers release them.

None. Don't try. The Volt is not designed to tow anything. It will void your warranty. It would be dangerous.
