Since the Cruze shares much of the same engineering as the Volt, I read this with great interest. They were very happy with it especially comparing it to the Civic and Corolla notably in handling and quietness.
For how quiet they say this vehicle is, I can only imagine what it's like in the all electric Volt with even more noise reduction. The US version of the Cruze is getting almost 2 full years worth of extra engineering and refinement and it scored the best crash test rating ever for its segment in European crash tests. And who can argue with 40 mpg and I'm hearing they are shooting for 44mpg now. It seems every detail of the engine, body, and suspension was extremely carefully engineered to give you the feel of a Cadillac in a $16k car.
I love the intro, Bob Lutz said that the Cobalt was the old GM mantra of making cars that were "good enough" and the Cruze is the best example of shooting for nothing less than "best in class". They even make the jab to the eye comparison of bringing up the car the Cobalt replaced, GM's spare every expense and shoot your reputation to pieces days, the "Cadavalier"...ouch.
My ex girlfriend's ride... broke the key off in the ignition one time trying to get it started.
Compare to
I'd say they've made some progress in the last 15 years.
