It seems clear that Broder, whether consciously or subconsciously, let his quest for a sensational story trump any journalistic integrity he may have had. He is backtracking in his rebuttal, with new "facts" not shared in the original article. If I would NYT, he'd be at least investigated, and no more car review stories by him allowed because of self-admitted journalistic incompetence. That said...

Musk's support staff appears to have put the nail in that Tesla's coffin with at least 3 incredibly bad pieces of advice, showing that they don't really understand their own tech. Sounds harsh, but if I were him I would fire those people, go public with the details, and announce new training and procedure standards to ensure Customer Service at all levels of Tesla has accurate info to give customers. Stakes are too high.

Bottom line: great product, but misused by ignorance and/or bad info.

There is a long history of automotive writers being in the tank and writing nothing but fluff. On the rare occasion a critical article is written, invariably the people who love the car are outraged. This is not unique to EV's. It seems that Broder was seriously pushing the Tesla to test the claim that it could be driven just like an ICE car, even though the Tesla is not an ICE car and should not necessarily be driven like one. Still, saying you were going 55 when you were going 60, or accelerating to 80 for one brief moment are not that big a thing, and in any case represent the sort of driving the Tesla should tolerate. For anyone who cares, Broder is not the only one to have trouble with the Tesla in cold weather:

I wonder if the Tesla's wide flat battery pack may have more trouble holding in heat under cold conditions?

A wise man once told me there are two sides to every story and the truth lies somewhere in between.

Knowing the state of journalism in this country being more interested in a story than the truth, my gut feeling tells me the truth lies closer to the Tesla story than the Times.

There's only two sides to this one, either NYT's or Tesla's. But the moral of the story is whoever is telling the story embellishes the truth to fit their needs. Whether it's 2 or a million is not important, the fact you rarely get the truth from a human .

If you haven't seen it, it appears Margaret Sullivan (NYT Public Editor) has closed the case with a just slap on the wrist for Broder for in her opinion, sloppy behavior and reporting, but not yellow journalism:

The influence of her brother was sure lucky for Tesla. Without that it could have leaned it the other way <grin>
Over the past several days, I have questioned and listened to Mr. Broder, Mr. Musk, two key Tesla employees, other Times journalists, the tow-truck driver and his dispatcher, and a Tesla owner in California, among others. I am aware of other, much more successful test drives in recent days by Model S owners and media organizations that are intended to show that the charging stations work perfectly well (although those tests lacked an element of Mr. Broder’s drive: one of the coldest days of the year). And I’ve read hundreds of e-mails and reader comments. I’ve also had a number of talks with my brother, a physician, car aficionado and Tesla fan, who has helped me balance what might have been a tendency to unconsciously side with a seasoned and respected journalist – my own “confirmation bias.”

Maybe the simplest way to solve this would have been, and still may be a viable option, is to scrap that first test since there was that bad charge that may have been the culprit(?).

Ask for a neutral party to perform that same test drive and document reading the manual and all steps along the way..call it a redo? and let those chips fall where they may.
