no insight at all, the economics of all this are so mixed up with subsidies that it is hard to say. Check this website out, you can see the power output going up as the sun comes up. I just dislike the complexity of windmills.

Why not put solar PV material on the wind turbine blades?

While wind and solar are neat and becoming more and more economical every day I have to say one of the most interesting things I've seen in the last few years is low temperature geothermal plants. Instead of steam and extremely high temperatures it uses a refrigerant and moderately high temperatures. It's a huge, only recently tapped, way under utilized, supposedly cost competitive, and can be used for base load without massive amounts of energy storage.
