I wanted to have a single post that covers options to modify the stock OEM EVSE for Level 2 charging. There seems to be a few separate threads about this and I'd like to get this information in one place, for ALL GM products (except 2012 and older Volts, sorry! Feel free to snag a quality OpenEVSE from VegasBrad in the "For Sale" section )
First off
1. Yes, this is safe (tested over and over)
2. Yes, plenty of people have done these.
3. Yes, you will possibly void the warranty of only the EVSE (13-14 for sure) and NOT the car.
Here are the cars confirmed that have come with EVSEs that can be either modified to operated at L1 and L2, or require no modifications:
I've converted my 2014 Volt EVSE to do L1/L2 and it's been working like a champ for over a year (see signature). I've also done the research and testing of the 2016 Volt EVSE in the second link in my signature. I'm happy to share 100% of my findings and aide anyone wishing to DIY these mods. I've also provided conversion services for the "4-wire mod" as well as fabricate 240V adapters for several forum members.
If you are charging your car with one of these modifications, please register your vote. The goal is for information exchange from owners that are interested in these modifications and those that have already done them. As the producer of the "4-wire mod" video for the 2013-14 EVSE and the thread that covers the 2015 and Gen2 240V adapter, I'm also available for questions here and PMs. In full disclosure, my personal goal is for people to be able to keep their cars' batteries charged as efficiently as possible and have flexible charging options available to them. The more miles we run on electricity, the less dependent we are on foreign oil. Sure, there are other reasons to drive pure EV, but those discussions can take place in other threads, thank you very much
Here's the links to the respective OEM EVSEs and how to convert them to operate at L1 and L2 charging:
