Thumbs up my turn to educate the public

sitting in my red volt waiting for the wife to come out of a store a very large SUV parks next to me. an older couple gets out and stands there and stares at my car. had the window down and the guy looks at me and says "you know that the taxpayers gave you 7,300 for that car. i responded "no, it was actually 7500 and i thank you for that. but since i am retired and living on social security i don't make enough to pay taxes at the end of the year. then i told them that it was made in America by Americans, and powered by American fuel . he was obviously a fox news ditto head, the wife came out and again i thanked him for the 7500 and drove off. damn that felt good.

You should have told him that you wished most of the "7300" came from his tax payment and then closed the window........I really can't stand the fact that people believe that we drive around in a "FREE CAR"......this crap is getting old already.....

I'm sure Faux News has the old guy believing that the Volt is the only car that receives the fuel efficiency tax credit, and that it's a case of socialist Obama favoring Government Motors. Of course the reality is a bit different:

And....don't forget to mention all the gasoline that you are saving for them to use in their SUV

Also that it takes 5kW hours of electricity to refine 1 gallon of gas

Hey, I'm new here. Been wanting a volt since the news hit that Chevy was designing it. So I got my new Volt on Friday, and put a "Mitt" sticker on it. Is that wrong?

I agree it's better to explain the truth instead of being glib when someone makes false claims - but politely. While it appears on the surface that we are a highly polarized society, very few people will be truly rude to one another face-to-face. The anonymity of the Internet just let's peope behave in ways they would never do in person. Also, there is a way for anyone, regardless of tax liability, to benefit from the tax credit. Lease. The full value of the credit is incorporated into the lease factor.

Well maybe another way to put it in perspective for them is that Romney took a $77,000 write off for 1 horse in 2010 and a VOLT owner can take $7500 for 149 horses. So that makes a VOLT a much better taxpayer deal per horse.

Well let’s see, Mitt Romney paid a 14.1 percent federal tax rate on $13.7 million of income in 2011.
    14.1% of $13,700,000 is…. $1,931,700.
    Had he paid 15%....
    15.0% of $13,700,000 is…. $2,055,000.

    A difference of $123,300 or…. 16.4 Volt $7,500 Credits.

Using Fox logic taxpayers paid for $123,300 of Mitt Romney’s expenses, car, clothing, vacations, fine dining…..
