    My wife rests her arm there when I'm driving (on her side of course ). She normally forgets to move her arm before I put it into park, and the door lock smacks her in the arm. She, of course, gets mad at me. We have a TDI VW Jetta that we have driven for the last 7 years, and it uses LED's instead of a physical post for the door locks. It is becomming more automatic now, but has taken some time to remember to move your arm before putting the car in park.

    You might be able to get way more information about this than you wanted from the service manual, under Vehicle Access -> Repair Instructions -> Front Side Door Locking Rod Replacement.

    I am a bit stunned in that with all the browsing I have done on gm-volt.com, I did not know that web site existed. Thanks!

    Edit: Looks as if one could just remove the rod and cover that hole up with a nice black plastic plug.
