It's getting better here in the burbs. Had a number of people in the last several weeks ask us questions at a stoplight. Of course, with the cooler temps, we have the windows down a lot more now, so that could be part of it. It is funny though to have a giant gas guzzling SUV ask at a light how we like the car. The response that gets them is "we haven't put gas in since we bought it in November of 2011". Over 7000 miles and still on dealer fuel. When you have 10 seconds to say something with the impact, that's the best line we can think of so far.
Silver Volt VIN: C03305, Nov. 2011
My Volt looks like a normal car that I do not get noticed--or I do not pay enough attention. *love it*. I hate to be *that* guy driving the strange car.
I did get a few second looks from my neighbors when they see it attached to the house when charging. That was the main signal to them that it was different. My car with a tail / tell!

I have been noticing more of this opver the past few months while driving. I am not sure if they are curious about the Volt or just realizing that it isn't another Cruze or Malibu and they want to see what it is.
I have also noticed more people stopping to take a closer look when walking past in a parking lot. Most ask common questions (MPG, how to plug it in, cost for electricity, etc.) but a guy last weekend simply asked me if I was one of those Volt owners that thought it was the best car ever. Of course, I said I am and told him all he needed to do was drive one and he would be a Volt owner as well.
