Default Leaf next to our Volt!

Often times, when we go out for dinner or shopping and are driving separate vehicles, we will drop off the Volt at a charging station downtown so it can get some free juice & then drive the other car (Mazda) around town. Tonight, when we came back from dinner and the mall, we saw a Leaf parked in the spot next to us. It had left it's charging door open, assumingly so I could plug it in for them once we were finished. I plugged it in, and it quickly made a chirp and a blue dash light started blinking. I decided to leave a message for them on a napkin, which I tucked under the Leaf's windshield wiper. This was the first EV (other than our Volt) I had ever seen charging (or gesturing for a charge) at this charging station. Neat!

Very nice of you to plug them in. I'm sure they appreciated it.

Nice gesture and I'm sure we would appreciate it done for us in return. I had a simular experience here in Las Vegas at the free charging station at the County Gov building. A black Volt pulled in next to me while I was setting up my level 2 charge. He hadn't charged his vehicle at a public Charge Point station before and didn't have a charge card. I used my card to activate the charging cycle for him. He too was very appreciative of the gesture. EVers need to work and support each other whenever possible. Miles of EV smiles to everyone....

I think this kind of courtesy is great and a protocol will develop, much like what we USE to do at gas stations, after done filling, pulling up so someone else can use the pump.

Too bad our Volts alarm if cord is removed. I think it'd be great if we had some kind of user method to signal another driver that if our car shows full charge, that they would be welcome to remove the cord and use it themselves. Like a sign in windshied "If dash light is flashing, feel free to use this charger". Something like that. Also, the reverse for situation like this poster ""Please charge me" left on dash with charge door open. :-)

(You can turn off the "un-plug" theft alarm... You surely don't need it at a public charging station...)

Yeah.. the way the dash lights are between the Leaf and Volt could probably confuse a Leaf driver. On the Leaf the lights flash when it is charging, and remain illuminated when charging is done. However on the Volt when it is charging the light stays illuminated, and when it is done charging it flashes.

As far as the Leaf saying "feed me" that is the first thing that has come to my mind as well whenever I open the charge port door. It does look like a little mouth on the front of the car. When we went to DC a few weeks ago we had a Leaf charging next to our Volt in a parking garage. Luckily there was 2 charging stations so no sharing needed. So far DC is the only public charging I have ever done since there is only 1 public station here in Norfolk, VA.

Default I still believe the most startling thing to others is how cheap Volts are to gas.

    Eyes go wide when told.

The Leaf needs it more than any Volt. Have pity on the Leaf.
