Default Need to be towed? Make sure to check this thread!

Cars break down, parts wear out, and eventually, you'll need to be towed. With the Volt being one of the lowest cars to the ground, most flatbeds won't be able to pick up the car without scraping some part of the car. This, is where Detroit Wrecker comes in! We've been distributing to Towing and Repo companies worldwide our own form of Flatbed Car Carrier, the Low Loader!

The Low Loader features a 3.5 Degree load angle, making it the lowest load angle of any flatbed on the market. This means that cars that are low to the ground, such as the Volt, won't be damaged while being loaded onto the bed.

We understand that most of the people on this forum aren't related to towing for the most part, but we figured that we'd share with you the knowledge of our unit. If you need to be towed, make sure the company you're calling has a Low Loader!

Below is a picture of the Low Loader. Click HERE or on the picture below to see the rest of the details of this flatbed, and share it with any towers you know or live by.

This was one of my concerns prior to buying my Volt. I load a lot of things onto a number of trailers I have on my farm, and even those items having a high ground clearance can scrape when they load onto the trailer using loading ramps. I have a membership in AAA and think if my Volt ever becomes disabled on the road, should I call AAA I hope they are "in-the-loop" about the Volt and understand it should not be loaded on a regular tow platform.

Good post and thanks for adding this photo.

(And I'm nearly terrified when I watch some wrecker drivers lift and load a car prior to towing...)

The Volt doesn't really have a particularly low ground clearance. It actually has an average ground clearance, higher than some competing cars - except for a ~2-3" flexible airdam that hangs down below the rest of the car (which is also both inexpensive and easily removed.) I wouldn't really worry about it.

I had to get towed. The manual depicts having to build a ramp, and that's exactly what we had to do. Fortunately the tow truck had a lot of lumber. Took about a half-hour to get the Volt on the truck without damaging the front end. The truck depicted above would have been much better.

My old Lexus had an eye bolt that screwed into a port in the front bumper to avoid this problem. Wonder why Chevy doesn't do this. My Volt has a cap in the front bumper, but my dealer told me it was not for towing. I haven't removed it to have a look.

You do need to be careful. I had to be towed due to a flat. The towing company pulled the car on to the flatbed rearend first. They did not do anything to prevent damage. As the frontend started on the truck the airdam and bumper dragged on the ground. Both were damaged . OnStar road side assistence did pay for repairs. But I learned that care needs to be taken when a Volt is put on a flat bed.

Your experience seems to mirror those of mine when I've seen some (but not all) wrecker drivers do the "wham-bam-thank you Sam" style of loading... and thus why I added this line on the last part of my post...

It's all in the wrecker operator. Trust me. Some are lazy, some are stupid, the majority will get it done with no issues.
