one question is, this works without factory nav, does anyone know if the disk player supports DVD's without factory nav? else i wouldnt see the use for this unless you want to add a backup camera.

Good point. People can get distracted with a 5 second text message and *KILL* someone, their passengers, or themselves. Why take the risk on something that is very distracting.
I have heard that people have found hacks to allow them to allow dvd playing while moving, and I think there are step by steps to allow that in the Ford Fusion as well as many popular OEM electronics.
In Texas, it is a ticket-able offense (ie, illegal) to have an active movie/video playing within a line of sight of the driver. The only exception is a gps or cell phone. But, I think there are some grey areas where the cell phones can be used far beyond as a phone or gps. I am guessing a police officer can classify it as offense if they are playing a video that the driver may be able to see.
Get your passenger a portable dvd player or tablet, , they are only $50-150 now. Plus you don't want to void your warranty by messing eith the electronics. Please don't try to watch it while driving, though.
