Volting on Vacation & Owner Meetup
My family recently went on a short vacation to Myrtle Beach, SC for a few days. Since we had a surplus of lease miles for the month of July, we decided to take the Volt down. On our 800 mile roundtrip journey (not including the driving we did around town), we averaged around 45 mpg, not bad considering only around 50 miles (figuring in a few from mountain mode) were electric.
For two of our days, we were able to plug the Volt.
-At the hotel, there was only one parking spot with a desirable charging setup, for which we ran the cords along the base of the wall on which the outlet was located. With that being said, we had to use two extension cords for the charging cord to barely reach. Nonetheless, we got a full charge overnight. (1st picture)
-On Tuesday, we were also able to charge the Volt. This time, we used a charging station that was recently installed at Ocean Lakes Campground (also in Myrtle Beach). Some of our extended family camps there every year, so we decided to take a look around for future plans. We rode around the campground on a golf cart (also electric) for a few hours, looking at the rental homes, and also taking a walk on the beach. At the end of 4 hours, the Volt was completely charged up. (2nd and 3rd picture)
-Also on Tuesday, we went to see The Carolina Opry (which was a great show). At some of the parking spaces near the main entrance, there were around 5 electrical outlets coming out from the ground, which were assumingly used for lights in the nearby trees (which were unplugged). (4th picture)
On our way home on Wednesday, we stopped at a Burger King/BP for lunch and to fill up on gas for the trip home. While two of us were waiting on our order, the other was moving the Volt from the gas tanks to a parking spot. We spotted a silver Volt in the drive thru, which was also from Virginia (Roanoke to be specific). We exchanged chirps and smiles, said hello, asked them a few questions about the Volt, and told them about the charging station at Ocean Lakes, which they weren't aware of. We took the same general route home and were in sight of each other for awhile, waving while we passed each other. It was really neat to see somebody from that close to home who was also in Myrtle Beach with their Volt. (5th picture)
