I too noticed it was a little difficult to close the hatch at first. I've never owned a hatchback before though. I quickly noticed that if you use the handle and pull it down below about head level, you can just let go and it will close itself. Between the weight of the door and the gas shocks, it closes quite smoothly, and not too fast.
