I am waiting on a call back from SPX for the level 2 charger quote date. Once they quote me ill let you all know what they are charging, know though that our utility company in the area subsidizes the first $2500, so it will probably be pretty close to that.
I got my blink level 2 charger installed last week. Quote was $1293. When I signed he paperwork it had less the $600 for the parts and labor for the installer then had $130 inspection fee. I have had inspection done before and they are usually are around $20. Mine was also considered a special install. It was about 5 feet of wire in conduit and an inset plug in the wall. I don't know why that would be considered special
I only had to pay $93 out of pocket, but as a tax payer it bugs me that spx is making all this extra money. Especially if people are having to pay so much out of pocket. The DOE set a fair price for probably 90% of all installs, and spx is taking advantage of it.
A similar thing happen when I had solar installed on my house. The solar installer jack up the price because they knew all the incentives. They are suppose to be incentives for the consumer, but the installer was reaping all the benefits. The installed just keep wanting to add more and more to the bill and kept telling me that I would get 1/3 back from the government.

I just called SPX today in response to a mailer I had received about two weeks ago. I was unaware that the incentive dropped from $1200 to $400 as of Tuesday. I've already had an electrician put in a new breaker, run conduit with wire sized to support the 240v charger, and install a new dedicated 110v outlet which I have been using with my Voltec charger. When he installed everything he said if I ever decided to buy a 240v charger all he would need to do would be to remove the 110v outlet and wire up and hang the 240v in its place. If the SPX installer wants more than the $400 for that he will be shown the door. My expectation is that the net price will certainly be more than the $490 it would cost me to just buy my own charger. I will report back but based on what I've read here already, I don't have high expectations.

Well my SPX subcontractor came in yesterday with a quote, here in Michigan DTE is offering to subsidize the installation for the first $2500. Of course the subcontractor came in at like $2607, this is like a 15 foot run through some conduit, I have an electrician friend that said it should be like 1500 total labor and part (including the charger cost of 500). I am half tempted to call DTE, and explain that SPX , and its sub-contractors are blindly stealing from them, and its even going to cost me 100, the downside is its still cheaper than me doing any of it through an independent contractor, so I will have to bite the bullet.
My Voltec is out for delivery and my 2013 Volt is on a train bound for me. Our plan is to self-install this weekend and be ready for delivery soon.
This whole thing is just sad how the contractors seem to be artificially inflating installation costs because they know there's an allocated amount that they can use. Are these subsidies coming from a common fixed pool of money? In other words, let's say there is $100,000 available to subsidize these installations and each installation can collect up to $2500 of it. That would mean that if every installation claimed the full amount, that only 40 installations could be done. However, if each installation only claimed the actual amount needed, potentially more installations could be subsidized. Would suck for the 41st person who applied but didn't get a subsidy because the contractors were greedy.
