I've used the 8A mode many times (because my electric outlet is not dedicated). I can understand defaulting to 8A (although I can't recall having heard of anyone tripping a circuit breaker). But forcing you to go through a 4-step process every time you leave the car seems crazy to me. Are they going to simply remove charging time from their website? Change it to "120V Charging time: 15 hours by default, but choosing 'Fast' mode will charge in just 10 hours!"?
Could "default" simply mean initial setting? I know that control "stickiness" (persistance) has not been a strong suit (the Volt radio has been flamed for this); however, I hope that GM got it right on the charging mode selection.

It defaults to 8A every time. Ugh. What a PITA. The existing solution of pressing the EVSE is simple and elegant. Yes some people try the higher charging and run into issues but that gets corrected as you move up the learning curve. There is always tension between getting the first experience right and getting later experiences right. If you're going to own a car for 10+ years I don't think it matters that it takes you a week or two to figure out the EVSE. On the other hand, having to go through the process of resetting the charging to 12A for the next ten years is going to be aggravating. Horrible design decision.

And just like that a 2013 Volt moves about 2 notches down my list of cars to consider when my Lexus hybrid lease is up later this year. Pity really. Stupid decision by GM IMO. But maybe I can find a great deal on a '12 since I don't need the new 13 features.
