    Default iPod not recognized

I have a 2 gig 2nd gen iPod Nano (MA477LL) version 1.1.3 that is not recognized by the sound system. The iPod source u=is greyed out. My iPhone 4S is recognized and works fine. Anyone else have this problem. The manual for the Volt says it should work. Thanks for any insight.

I can suggest a few things to try.

    1. Try a different USB cable. You may have a faulty USB cable.

    2. Back up your iPod in iTunes. Then perform a "restore". This will re-format the iPod and reset the software load.

    3. Run any software upgrades on the iPod. Then re-synch your iPod and load all your favorite tunes back on the iPod.

You might also want to check the compatibility information with your Volt advisor. Some older model iPods may not support the USB streaming capabilities.

You can also load MP3's onto a USB thumb drive and try playing that instead. (The Volt will not directly play AAC files from a thumb drive.)

I have an old iPod Classic 120gb that would work, but took forever to index the library. I went to a newer iPod Touch that indexes quickly and generally works fine. The had an issue with audio popping that was resolved by setting the volume on the iPod to maximum and then rebooting it.

The only other issue I have is when I make a quick stop and then restart the Volt. Sometimes the iPod app on the Volt is stuck in Pause mode and other times the volume won't come out of the Volt's audio but out of the iPod itself inside the center console.

After the Volt has been off for a while, the iPod then works normally.

Yes, exactly the same here. When I plug in my 2GB 2nd generation iPod Nano the car simply doesn't recognise that there's anything on the USB port. With the same cable my wife's 5th generation iPod Nano works fine. USB sticks also work fine. This is in a brand new (as in collected from the dealer yesterday) UK Chevrolet Volt (no sat nav).
I can't verify that my manual says it should work as they didn't give me a manual for the infotainment system (and the other manuals were electronic only!), but the UK Ampera manual definitely includes 2nd generation iPod Nano as compatible.

Sounds like it's time to buy a more modern iPod. Or use a USB stick. It may well be an issue that the 2nd generation iPod simply can't stream audio over the USB port. It may not be the Volt's fault. It may be the fact that that model of iPod simply can't support the digital interface feature required to integrate with a modern system.

My iPod nano 3rd gen would constantly lose contact with the car. I finally gave up and bought a 16GB USB drive, and it's worked perfectly ever since.

Just upgraded to a new nano and it works great. My son got the old one. Everyone wins

I also gave up and sold my iPod Classic 128GB due to problems. I bought two 64GB SD cards for $38 each and split my collection on both. It now indexes quickly and doesn't have the song count limitation and song duplication that the iPod had.

does 64 gb flash drive work, I had freezing problems with ipod 160 gb classic, I just gave up and switched to aux input and has been working fine, but miss the song ID which comes with USB. I am planning to switch to 64 gb flash drive, anyone here in the forum using 64 gb?

Essentially 64GB SD-XC cards with a USB adapter is the same as a 64GB flash drive. They work great for me. Just make sure you reformat to FAT32 to be properly recognized.
