I've owned a Volt for about 2 months now and also noticed the 120v pigtail/plug and the orange charge cable will get noticeably warm when charging at the higher rate, so I had been charging at the lower rate with no problems. I originally had it plugged into my garage circuit which was 15A and had other loads on it. I recently converted a 240v circuit to a dedicated 120v/20a circuit with 20a receptacle. Still the plug and cable get warmer (in my opinion) than they should. I've had some experience with electrical loads (40+ years HVAC) and it's always been my experience that anytime an electrical conductor gets warm, there is a problem somewhere. I'll post some actual temperatures tomorrow.

Didn't know there was a recall on the cord, and I didn't even know there were more than one amperage settings on the cord. I plugged it in, and didn't even pay attention to what all those little green lights mean't. I'll check the temp on the cord next time I'm in the garage. So far, no problems, not heat issues in the cord. Thanks Volt family. Good to be a member.
When I did the battery update at the dealer there were 3 items on THEIR to do list:
1. battery and the fluid item
2. air bag
3. new charge cord ( or two units if you had an extra)

I don't think the unit or the long or short cords gets too hot but IF I DID think so I would take a temperature reading and report to the group.
I am out of them now but you can get a pkg of DOTS that change color at different temperature ranges.

Look at my thread here:

The older ones get hot in my opinion. I haven't measured the one I got in May (with the black cord to the 120V plug) for temperature. Get the Dealer to replace it.

It's NOT a RECALL, its a Customer Satisfaction Campaign and has been discussed for months here on the forum.
Please take a few minutes of your day and stop by your local Chevy Dealer. They will most likely have to order a replacement, but its a ONE for ONE swap.

My charge cord was 117 to 120 deg F today - The charger was not on and cord not connected to the car.
that was just its temp in a cover car port with semi-direct sun.
If that was bath water I would say it was WARM I might even say it was HOT.
Now the charger was 120-140 Deg as it is placed 1 inch under a hot Texas iron roof which was 155+ Deg F.
I don't generally pull power from the charger tell after sun set but it is always plugged into 120 Volts ac.

In a strange twist, I guess, the dealer came through better than advisors. Thanks DonC but you just stay out of my thread. I dont think you really have a clue.
Well a little late but I did record some temperatures a while back... Garage temp was 92-93 and static voltage at the outlet was 123.4V. Charging at the 12A rate I recorded the following average temperatures over about 4 hours: The black 120V plug was 112-115, the orange cable (fully unwrapped from the charger) was 103-106. The center core of the charger (where the orange cable wraps) was 123. Electrical data (avg) under load: 118.8V - 11.7A - 1390W. FWIW
