I think having DC fast chargers at gas stations is a very logical next step. My question is what will be the price after the short free trial period? Gas station companies will be looking to make a profit, and they don't have the best track record selling their main product.
The Leaf, with its Chademo port, will be the only user of these DC fast chargers. I'm looking forward to the day when the Leaf, Volt, ELR, Model S etc, can standardize on the SAE DC quick charge specification.

I don't think any more government money should be spent on CHAdeMO. 8 manufacturers have said they're not going to use it (they've backed the SAE Combo) the Leaf sales are in the tank, and current owners won't pay it's actual usage costs anyway so what's the point in rushing government funded CHAdeMO out there? Many of the current CHAdeMO units can be converted, but it's not as simple as changing plugs and it's not cheap.
Privately funded, I'm fine with those.

I think DC fast charging makes sense for a future Volt if the battery range ever approached 200 miles... You might still have the gasoline backup, but you could do most charging at home and or DC fast chargers (Keeping the charge in the middle of the SOC... reducing the damage Dan & Nan and you are referring to).
I guess what motivates my praise of fast DC charging roll-out is my secret love affair with the Model S and pure BEVs... As soon as I can afford to, I'll likely leave my Volt for a Model S with the 85 kWh battery. There! I'm out of the closet as a Model S lover! I love my Volt too!
