Angry Vegas summer KILLS mileage - 28 miles on a charge :(

Got in my car after work today and saw this.

Got into my garage after noticing that the ICE kicked on (not normal for an average day) checked my stats:

Love my Volt...hate what our hellish summer is doing to my mileage.

Edit: I should say...A/C on Comfort and about 75% fan speed...when it's this hot there's no way around that.

That's very very hot! I forgot how hot it got there until my visit last August. Still its better range than the super cold temperatures up north. People commonly get 20-30 miles per charge up there!

Default Holy Toledo - 121 degrees!!!

    Run, don't walk, run.

Seriously, try the nano carbon or nano ceramic window tint, and if the roof is black. put a very reflective or insulating topper on there. At 121, very tough on batteries. I'd take the 28 though to stay cool. That's Sun temperatures.

But that's a DRY heat...... I thought the 109 we saw here in St Louis was HOT, but our heat is wet with humidity and just drapes all over you like a wet sponge. So I'll take DRY heat any day, but 121 is obscene.

Ceramic window tint has really helped reduce the solar heat transfer into the car and occupants.

And FWIT my battery range was reduced to 36 Vs my usual 43/44.

109f in oklahoma with 85% humidity, a/c on comfort/auto 70f, mixture of 70mph highway and in town driving, 38 miles on a charge with one tire down to 34 psi. 4,200 miles on 1.7gal of gas, i have no complaints.

    We get 112 degrees here.

    1. Use the Volt car cover. I found it very effective.

    2. Plug in to an available 110V outdoor outlet. Explain the situation and most people are reasonable.

    3. Of course, give it a 15 minute remote start when plugged in.

    4. Park in a structure if possible.

    5. Convince the powers that be at work to install a 240V charging station or at least a 110V outlet. I did it and it took some politicking but it's worth it. There are other threads on how to do this.

    6. The battery is well insulated. The TMS acts within the insulation, giving it an edge. When the battery SOC is above a certain level, leaving it more vulnerable, the TMS comes on periodically powered by the main battery itself. The parameters for this are on this board but not from an internal source.

How does that protect the battery?

Keeping the battery at its norm op temp is important Cold or Hot. Wtih temp at it's designed temp will give better range, but negating factor is the use of lots of AC or Heat. Situation can be controled but, if you want to be cool or heated, there is no way around the laws of Physics. Keeping the care pluged into a 240 charger is the best way to keep the battery at op temp.
