Not selling the Volt but your comparison on the costs didn't include the savings on fuel people can realize immediately which could subsidize the initial costs. Also, the more stuff that is added to the Volt the more range is depleted because of the added weight. That's partly why the more lavish power features are absent like power articulation for the seats, power folding mirrors, lack of a moon roof perhaps? So you are paying for the technology and not for a luxury class vehicle although the Volt is nicely equipped with features most discerning buyers would appreciate like Nav, high level stereo, heated seating, lighted vanity mirrors, leather seating, Homelink and others.
After all was said and done, more was said than done!
