Default Volt Unfairly Hammered In News Story Comments

Uninformed GM bailout haters (dare I say idiots!) have hijacked the comment section of a Detroit News story headlined "GM Volt Sales Rise in June". It's disgusting how many myths and mis-truths I saw in the comments.
The story reflects positively on the Volt....

Unbelievable how people form an opinion first and ignore facts to affirm false beliefs.

There were some people trying to get the truth out, but the audience as a whole seemed very closed minded and sure of their invented/innuendo "facts."

I'm going to hazard a guess it's a strongly Republican/Conservative site - even the article was slanted ("forced to shut down production twice" - no mention of the new arrangements with the unions that cause them to do this with most car lines - like the best selling Cruze that was shut down for three weeks last fall - instead of running at an inefficient slower pace like they used to.)

If people won't listen and judge for themselves, they'll be left with whatever their opinion shapers choose to give them - which means among other things that they'll miss out on an awesome car (and most likely that they'll be in a world of hurt when gas prices rise as they inevitably must.)

Well said! The Volt is a spectacular automobile.....their loss!

From another post today: "With BMW betting the company on the Chevy Volt drivetrain architecture, it is likely that this will bring the ultimate vindication for GM. It will be time for the Volt critics to cut their losses at that time.

It is worth reminding Volt watchers that the Chevy Volt has the highest customer satisfaction rating of any car in the U.S. market, according to Consumer Reports -- even higher than the Porsche 911. A record 93% of Volt owners would recommend the car, compared to 91% for the Porsche 911. Conversely, close to 99% of all people criticizing the Volt have never driven it.

And what would be the only car company with even higher respect and customer esteem than BMW? Yes, that would be Porsche."

I've given up on trying to find sanity in comments sections on news websites. They invariably turn into right-wing shouting matches among people who have way too much time on their hands. There's rarely a well-balanced debate to be found there. I'm sure the only reason news websites install them is to keep people coming back to click on ads.

The idiocy is astounding: the Volt can't operate in a power outage, it only holds two people, the only sales are to GE and government agencies. How do people with this amount of severe brain damage operate a computer?

So you are saying all Republican/Conservatives are the same? I consider myself Very Conservative and I drive a Volt!! You are sound as bad in this thread as the people you are bashing. Everyone is entitled to there opinion even if it is wrong.

The article does give an overview of just how out to lunch Ghosn & Co. at Nissan are.

Where are they going to put all the Leafs when they crank up production in Tenn.? Hope they have a good export plan. Folks should be railing about how they got 1.4 billion for that.

If the average American buyer can't handle a Volt with a backup engine, how can they live with battery only?

It's not obvious who you intended this comment for. I certainly did not intend to suggest that. The only Republican/Conservative people I have a problem with are the ones who listen only to opinions and sites that agree with their thinking, and never stop to look at the evidence or think for themselves. I'm not sure if there are a lot of those, or if they are simply more vocal or promoted more by the media, but it has been frustrating.

FWIW, I don't really identify with either party - I tend to fall more towards democratic social perspectives but republican financial ones; an online test suggested Libertarian might be a good fit, but lately the only Libertarians I see in the news want to take that to extremes and live as if the last two centuries didn't happen, which also won't work.

I don't understand how anyone who understands the facts and looks at the evidence can either hate the Volt the way those commenters do or spout the misinformation that fills every page. For the record, I have no problem with anyone from any political affiliation who is willing to listen, find the truth, and argue their position based on an intelligent expostulation of facts and principles. I just wish I could find more people like that (which is actually one of the great things about this particular forum. )
