Thread: Volt Accident

I got my Volt back yesterday. My rental car averaged 35 MPG, but still made a big dent in the pocketbook compared to the Volt. Check engine light came on yesterday three error codes related to the oxygen sensor. The car goes into the dealer Monday morning. The problem might be related to putting the car back together.

    bizmodel,

Glad you got your Volt back. Any update?

My 2007 Accord was wrecked (rear ended at a red light) and it took a month to get it back, and then I still had to take it back. It's kinda the norm. And the cost was nearly double that of the estimate. The shop really missed the mark. They ended up having to tow it to Honda to get the Airbag and codes reset as they couldn't do it. And this was one of the premier shops used by the big insurers (I made sure my insurance and the other guys both used the shop, in case there was any bickering).

Getting a car repaired is never a pleasant experience.

Two days after I had the oxygen sensor replaced the check engine light came on again. This time it was for exhaust temperature. I was running on electric at the time. The dealer suspected a wire up front in the area of the accident. They called me and said they can not find the problem, and had a call into GM. The solution was a new wiring harness to the computer. That seemed to do the trick, it has been a week and no more error codes.

Thanks for the update. I can imagine that after an accident the dealer really don't know what to do with a Volt. Glad GM is providing them good stupport for diagnostics.

Default Waiting for a new computeer

Since I got my Volt back, I have had the check engine light come on three different times. The first an oxygen sensor was replaced. The second time the wire harness to the computer was replaced. The car is now at the dealers waiting for a new computer. If these problems are related to the accident, which was minor, it would, at least to me indicate a larger problem with the Volt. Before the accident, or the first 17,000 miles I had zero problems.
It would be interesting to take my car completely apart to see why an impact of less than 5 mph would cause so many problems.

Do you have any photos of the damage? If it was in either front corner thre are primary modules and harnesses that might have been damaged in the crash or not properly assembled. Unfortunately when they do a collision estimate and repairs, most body shops lack anyone with any serious electrical expertise , so cars often they just get the structural repaired, hope for the best and worry about "working out the kinks" afterwards.F rustrating I'm sure.
Just make sure you mention to the dealer that the car had been recently repaired and if possible provide the workorder for those repairs so they know what was done in detail, as these repairs would become part of the insurance claim, not warranty.

I think problems are more about taking appart the car to fix it as opposed to the accident its' self. Then putting it back together again and getting it right as it is done in the factory. I have taken things appart and know how easy it is to break or damage a part in the process and you might not even know that it has become defective, unitll you put it back together. I am sure they had to take many parts off the car.

    Default Volt accident

The body shop was owned by the dealer until several years ago. The dealer supervised the electric dismantling and reassembly. When every thing was off the car I was able to see a large cross member that sits behind the radiators. I assumed this cross member was to protect critical components, it was not damaged. There was one wire that sits behind the drivers side wheel that had its insulation broken, that was replaced. A fuse box had a small crack and that was replaced. Both of these were on the front drivers side. The liquid on the road came from the pickup.

Just an update on my Volt. Since the Battery Control Module harness was replaced I have had no more problems. The defective harness had nothing to do with the accident. This is good news, since the impact of the accident was minor.
