Default Tax Credit for Residential Charging?

I got an e-mail from GM today entitled "Special links for Volt Owners". One of the links was "Learn about electric vehicle charging incentives", and goes here:

    http://goelectricdrive.com/Incentive...detailId=24013

    That page, at GoElectricDrive.com says:

Tax Credit for Residential Charging: Up to $1,000
Consumers who purchase residential fueling equipment may receive a tax credit of 30%, up to $1,000 for equipment placed into service after December 31, 2010.
The same page references this page:

    http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/laws/law/US/351

On the AFDC page linked above, the information is under the heading, " Hydrogen Fuel Infrastructure Tax Credit". It says (in part):

"A tax credit is available for the cost of hydrogen fueling equipment placed into service after December 31, 2005....Consumers who purchase qualified residential fueling equipment may receive a tax credit of up to $1,000. Under current law, this credit expires December 31, 2014."
So it seems that the credit will not help Volt owners if I am reading this correctly. If that is the case, I am wondering why GM sends links to Volt owners, and the "GoElectricDrive.com" site references a HYDROGEN credit.

Perhaps I am reading the text too narrowly and it DOES apply to electric cars?

Anyone, Chevy, GM, Voltarians, anyone know?

    Thanks,

    Mark

I tried to take EVSE tax credit for 2011 and ran up against Alternative Minimum Tax wall. Nothing allowed.

There was a credit for installing charging equipment, but AFAIK it expired at the end of last year and wasn't renewed.

If you review the form used to claim this credit, you will find that it did apply to EV recharging stations through tax year 2011. So, if you installed a charging station in 2011 you could claim it, but you cannot claim for an EV charging station installed after December 31, 2011. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8911.pdf

Thanks. Now clear on the credit.

Still not clear on why GM would send Volt owners the link and & why GoElectricDrive.com still has it posted.

For those who might wish to file an amended return because they did not realize the credit was available? I did use this form and got my credit.

Well I guess it is not all bad if it helps people who may have missed the chance earlier to file an amended return.

Nevertheless, it is misleading the way it was presented. They could have said something like, "Did you miss this credit?" instead of suggesting it was still good.

No matter, I understand now, and I have moved on.

    Thanks for your note.
