Maybe a better idea would be a series of layered flexible solar cells tuned to different parts of the optical spectrum from infrared to ultraviolet. Each layer would only collect from its spectrum band and would let the rest of the band pass through. The cell stack would be theoretically up to 60% efficient and could probably generate about 3 to 5 Kwh per day. NOt huge but something.

So if you have the technology to make this 60% efficient (flexible, no less!) solar panel, why hasn't it hit the market in any form - or even any news announcement I know of?

The most efficient solar panel I can buy today are Sanyo HIT-21s, nominally 21% efficient. Five years ago, I think it was about 16%.

The roof is not flat. The solar cells would need to be not just flexible but stretchable like the clear bra material on my Volt.

For the QR Code, you'd want a vector graphic (scalable to any size without loss in image resolution quality). The best engine for that is produced by Aleyant Systems. They have a free QR Code generator here: http://www.pressero.com/page/cmyk-ve...code-generator And they support any color, not just black and white.

To date the problem has been cost effective production and reliability. The industry focus has been towards narrow band low efficiency cells that are high yield . The kind of cells I'm talking about would be a hybrid of cells that were in research labs a decade ago. Obviously they haven't figured out a way to effectively manufacture and monetize the product, but some are probably working in satellites because their programs can afford them.

I was thinking something in the $50 range.

If cheap is the goal, try "vinyl wrap auto" on eBay. I haven't measure the roof dimensions. Here is a 48"x60" matte white for $63.60:

There are other listings for yellow, orange, purple, red, green, blue. Anything with a logo is going to be expensive. I Looked at the MINI roof wrap designs - they are around $200-300.

I think that is what I am looking for. Thanks!

I think you should get a field of blue electrical arcs.
