Default Dash camera group buy. Blackvue DR400-G HD

I have been lurking in this forum reading up on the Volt for the last few months, it was a real help in pushing me to trade the G37 in for a jet black Volt.
I probably won't post much if at all, but I did want to mention a group buy on Tsxclub.com for a windshield mounted dash camera. It may be the best one on the market right now...if you're interested, come by and read the thread. The more the merrier and probably a better deal as well.

Edit: Group buy is back on, gaugeing interest on tsx forums so head over and add your name to the list.

    seems interesting.

I am not familar on how this would be installed? I am not sure that I feel comfortable with people tweaking up my Volt, but I guess for simple electronics, it is a straight forward job.

Do the local Chevy dealership warrant such types of installations? I guess it won't be cheap.

Another question: If the vandals get inside the car, I guess there is nothing that would prevent a vandal to rip the unit off the mount or pull out the SD card? I guess this would just be helpful for the minor incidents that may be facing where the camera is pointed to? And, perhaps to see other incidents in the surrounding.

The biggest issue with a dashcam is finding power that automatically turns on when the ignition is on, and off when the the ignition is turned off. This allows you to install it and forget it, as the dashcam comes on when you turn on the car and automatically turns off when you switch the car off. Dashcams that have been designed as accident recorders automatically over-write their memory except in an accident where higher than normal g-forces trigger a mechanism to save the recording before and after the incident.

In the case of the Volt getting power is really easy. There is a retained power outlet in the storage bin on the top of the dash. There is also retained power in the mirror, but this is a little more difficult to access. Retained power come on when you switch your Volt on, and stays on for 10 minutes after you turn the Volt off. So all you have to do to install a dashcam is physically mount the camera, usually with a double stick pad to the windshield, and plug it into the power outlet in the dash storage bin, or if you really want a clean installation, pick up retained power from the mirror. This should not impact your warranty.

The GB comes with the Power Magic, I'm not sure we would need it for our car unless you want to record after the power is off. In that case you would need to tap into a power outlet that's always hot. On ebay I see these going for about $173, not sure if there's a savings going through the GB.

For that price I would be interested in it. I can always sell the power magic PRO if I don't need it.
krusin_ - can you give more info regarding purchasing?

I'm interested if I can figure out how to connect it to the vehicle power in the rear view mirror. Being able to keep the camera on while parked seems useful when parking in a risky area. The camera is always on and records video only when it detects motion in its field of view or registers a shock to the vehicle. For the parked mode to work the camera needs power when the vehicle is parked. Does the Volt's mirror also have constant 12 volt power?

This video about the product is very comprehensive: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e49Ku...layer_embedded

Frankman - It would be cool if the mirror has a 12v constant, then you can stick the Power Magic Pro onto the windshield.

    Thanks krusin_ for finding this.

Can anyone offer some help with connecting this device to wiring in the rear view mirror, or the black box behind the rear view mirror? The device says it draws 3 watts of power max.
