Default California $1500 rebate: Instant or not?

I'm hoping to purchase a Volt soon. I wanted to know if the $1500 California rebate is paid directly to the dealer, reducing my out of pocket, or do I have to wait for it in the mail? If so, how long does it typically take?

You have to wait for it. The approval/mail process was quick but it may take a while to get the check. Maybe another 30 or 60 days. I'm waiting for mine (purchased the Volt at the end of May).

It's not instant but I got my check in about a couple of weeks.

They mail you a check after you complete all of the required documentation.

I received my check just 10 days after I mailed in the paperwork. I was pleasantly surprised.

It takes about a month and you have to apply for it yourself.

Going on 5 weeks since application for $1500 rebate was approved and still waiting . . . if another 3 weeks goes by and still no check, I'm going to get worried.

    My chronology:

I got online and submitted a qualifying request. The next day I got an email saying I qualify and to submit the remaining paperwork within 10 days. I did that. A week later I get an email saying my rebate was approved and is being processed and that it could take 60 days. Later this week, it'll be three weeks since I mailed in my paperwork.

However, I would rather receive my HOV decals first!

Update (2012-10-25): Woo-hoo! I received my HOV/Carpool decals this week! Now, still waiting for the $1,500 rebate to arrive.

My HOV stickers took about a month. I'm still waiting on my rebate. It was approved on 8/28 and the email said it will be within 60 days. I SHOULD see it any day now.
