Default Lovin my Volt, but Check Engine Light at about 400 Miles

I'm loving my Volt. Getting 40/45 miles on a charge. When it goes to the range extender I can hardly tell and it still gets 38 MPG. Nice, but...

On the way home from work I noticed the check engine light on. When I went to the dealer they said I had a bad cord on my 110 volt charger and gave me a new one and asked me to return the old one when it was convenient. That seemed odd to me because it seemed to work fine. I had mentioned to them that I had to try three charging units at the county charge station to find one that worked. Turns out the bad charge cords at the county charging station turned on the check engine light. Not the car at all.

Is there a way to turn off the check engine light when you know what it is?

I definitely recommend you contact your Volt Advisor. They will make sure you get the right answer, even if your dealer experience is not consistent. My personal advice is not to assume that you know what is causing the Check Engine light. Might be a different cause the next time. When it does come on, hit the OnStar button right away and ask them to give you the codes it is showing. They will direct you to the dealer if needed (likely). It shouldn't keep coming on. Your Volt Advisor will stick with you through it until it is completely right.

I had mine come on once after about 8500 miles. Took the above action, took to dealer, they consulted with GM. Turned out to be a transient with no action necessary. The vehicle did not perform any differently while the light was on, and it's been working beautifully ever since.

The car will automatically turn off the engine light after 3 or 4 more "test" events that are similar to what caused the failure (In this case charge cycles).

You can also hit the onstar button and have them run a remote diagnostic on the car to find out what illuminated the light, but I don't believe they are able to reset the check engine light remotely.

If it was just the charger then the CEL should clear after a few charging events. If it doesn't clear you should talk to OnStar. You might have to visit your dealer.

There is alway the possibility your dealer ment you have the older version of the charger cord and were going to swap out for the new one.
