Default Finally having to buy Gas - almost had to use an eye dropper to get it in.

We made it about 6 weeks and 2500 miles on the first tank and got a unpleasant surprise when we gave 'Sparky' it's first fillup. We almost had to use an eye dropper to put the gas in the tank. The vapor recovery system at the gas station kept kicking off the flow of the nozzle. I went to 4 stations and had the same problem. I will be taking it to the dealer soon but it will probably be months before I need gas again. Anyone else had a similar problem?

    Great car though..... Bill

I haven't had that issue. There's a thread around here somewhere in which WopOnTour points out that the Volt has a lip inside the filler tube that's designed to catch a wedge on the nozzle, to hold it down in the tube, and keep the gasket sealing the joint. If you get is on the lip, gas flows in easily in my experience. (This is easier to understand with the pics that are in that thread...)

My first fill did the same thing and I had fuel back washing from the filler and all down the side of my car, but on subscquent fills it acted like any other car. Am curios as to what's going on here?

    Please keep us posted.

Never had this issue. Well, not in the 6 or 7 fill ups we have had.
We did find this on occasion with other cars. To us, with the exception of one gas station, it seemed to depend on the day. If Wops suggestions don't work for you, have you had really high temperatures or some enviormental issue that could have contributed to it?

    Hi Bill,

The filler neck assembly is unique to the Volt and gas station pumps vary greatly and you might find this situation better (or worse?) when you fill at another station. If you continue to be dissastified with the manner in which you Volt accepts fuel at the pump, then there could possibly be something wrong with the on-board refueling vapor recovery system, (which is also unique in the Volt) so I would suggest commenting on it when you next visit your dealership service department.

My one time fill up experience seemed perfectly normal. However I'm in CA where the pumps have nozzles designed to prevent vapors from escaping to the atmosphere. No idea how well they work but when I first got to CA I remember having some difficulty with them. Could be a difference in pumps and you'll figure out how to get it to work with the pumps in your area after a little experience.

I had this problem with my Saturn when a nearby Exxon station upgraded to the new fueling pumps with plastic thing to capture the vapors. Every 3-5 seconds, snap/click, no more gas. I think the backflow sensor was catching it. Almost consistent. I think it was the way it was calibrated.

I was able push up a little on the nozzel that may have given it a better flow so it didn't sense the false "backflow". But, what a pain to old the pump for 15 gallons to be pumped through while holding it.

I avoided that station for months, and when I checked back, it seems to operate normally--people probably started to complain and they had it recalibrated. I also noticed that the new plastic vapor catcher seems to be a little more flexible, worn, or used, so that may have helped too.

I still get that problems from time to time at gas stations that I do not frequent. Sometimes, I try releasing the gas slowly, but most often I find that it works best to push it slightly upwards to let a more straight flow into the tank.

I've filled up 3 or 4 times and haven't had this problem. Try a different station.
