Thread: Less than 400 miles and SEL on :(

Default Less than 400 miles and SEL on :(

Just picked up my Volt from Los Angeles and drove it back up north.

Unfortunately, about half way through the trip the service engine light came on. I spoke with On-Star and they mentioned that it the engine had detected a problem with the secondary emissions control system, and that it was safe to drive on, but should be taken in for service within a week.

Has anyone had this issue or anything similar? I'll have to find a local dealer to take it in to on Monday.

Other than that (and the strangely decreased MPG after it came on - dropped to ~34MPG from ~40MPG) the car really is a pleasure to drive. I'll need to learn to watch my speed in sport mode - the car is sneaky fast.

Sorry to hear about your problem. 4,000 miles in 7 weeks and no issues yet for me. Knock wood. Good luck. I am sure you will love your Volt.

Mine came on and then went off the next day after a charge cycle. Going to have Chevy read the code when it goes in for the battery enhancement.

Infant mortality - the "bathtub curve." Folks that do reliability/maintainability studies find that generally things either fail almost immediately or last a really long time. You apparently had something in the emissions control go almost immediately - something that it sounds like knocked the computer into open loop fueling (preprogrammed safe amounts of fuel instead of realtime management based on the results of the O2 sensors - this overfueling for safety will result in the reduce economy you noted.) A bad Oxygen sensor is the most likely culprit, though it could be something else in that chain...

While this is still on the front page, has anyone had awesome/awful service from any of the dealers on the SF bay peninsula?

Never had that on my Volt, but on my gas cars the first thing I do when I get that light is open and re-close the gas tank, making sure it clicks the required number of times.

Default Just keep taking it in for repair to get it right.

My Volt has been in the repair shop with MAJOR issues almost since purchase. Be lucky that's all you have. From burning plastic, coolant smells, to the electric motor refusing to turn on, AC failute, center console blipping off, the works. My car may well set the standard for a junk volt. 4th time I'll be heading to the Lemon Law procedures if they don't swap the car out. Obviously a great car, but there are lemons that get through. Hope you're issues clear up quickly.
