The Importance of Winter Wiper Blades and Glass Treatment

Snow, ice, freezing rain, and frigid temperatures make winter driving treacherous; nevertheless you're prepared, right? But what about your wiper blades?

If they're the same ones that baked on your windshield all summer then you could be in for problems. How do you know if your wiper blades are any good? At no time of the year is seeing out of your windshield more important, and more difficult, than in winter. Quality wiper blades should evenly and effectively squeegee water out of their path in both directions no matter what speed you're going. Soft rubber compounds necessary for wiper performance are always under attack by road grit, the sun, acid rain, tree sap, ice, and especially winter salt. Arm your car or truck with Rain-X Glass Treatment and Rain-X wipers.

Rain-X Latitude 8-In-1 Wiper Blades are the ultimate blades for sleet and snow. Unlike conventional wiper blade frames, the Latitude's beam design won't collect ice and snow, which can freeze conventional frames to the point where the blade no longer contacts the windshield. With Latitude blades you won't have to interrupt your trip to clear ice and snow from wiper blade frames, only to have them freeze again. Also Rain-X develops a line of related glass care products. Because Rain-X Glass Treatment requires the glass surface to be perfectly clean, Rain-X X-treme Clean is the perfect glass cleaner. It removes dirt, grime, and bugs, plus build-up that other cleaners leave behind, from glass and clear plastic. Rain-X 2-In-1 Glass Cleaner not only cleans, it also applies a rain repellent to improve wet weather driving. Click here to see how exactly it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTpfaxI5DSI

I presently use the Rain-X Glass treatment, but I have the best solution for all those winter problems: move south!
I am a New Yorker and I suffered the common winter conditions, but in 1962 my family moved to Puerto Rico and we will never go back, unless we want to feel winter for a short visit. You save thousands of dollars per year in all that winter stuff for cars, live longer and happier!

Doesn't the Volt already have the type of wiper blade that is in the ad?

I haven't used RainX glass treatment in a long while. I just get by without it, though I'm sure that things would improve visually if I did use it.

A trick that I learned way back in 1956 when driving a Good Humor truck that suddenly had a wiper arm break during a rain storm was to pour Coca Cola on the outside of the glass causing the rain drops to instantly become a transparent sheet of water. That got me through the storm as I drove my route. No customers in the rain though 8^(

I wouldn't recommend Coca Cola over RainX. RainX does a much better job and won't potentially damage the car's paint.

Amazingly I still have my stock wiper blades after 2.5 years. I park in the garage at home, and in the shade most of the day at work, so they seem to be lasting a long time.
I do use the Rain-X 2-1 windshield washer fluid though. The one time I bought cheap stuff, in ended up as a solid block of ice in my reservoir...

Same here. I do clean the windshield weekly and spritz mine with Turtle Wax ICE.

I'm a big fan of the Rainx wiper blades.
I will try the turtle wax ice.
Best clean I ever got my front windshield was using methylene chloride, followed by denatured alcohol... of course you have to be careful- methylene Chloride is a carcinogenic paint stripper....

I have used RainX glass treatment (not the additive for the wiper fluid) following the directions about not getting on paint and such. Kind of a pain. Now I use glass cleaner (Invisible Glass, but I think any will do), and crumpled newspaper to wipe. This does a good job for me of leaving them streak-free.

The Turtle Wax ICE is also what I use on my paint. I'm lazy. Spray and wipe, but a much lighter coat on the windshield and hatch window. I also wipe down the wiper blades with it. Water beads up nicely on the windshield and blows off like RainX, reducing the need for wipers.

Perhaps the coating lubes the windshield and wipers, reducing friction wear on the blades without leaving a smeary mess behind. Or maybe it's simply that the weekly windshield cleaning keeps grit from tearing up the blades. Whatever, mine are still working good as new, 3 years and 7 months later. This will be their 4th winter.
